Hate to burst your bubble but very little (relatively speaking) oil and therefore they decided to be a tourist/economic center. Been there twice and its an amazing emirate (there are 9 believe and hence UAE). This is one city where you can taste any flavour of poon u want for under $200/all night.humanfly009 said:

Actually, its all oil. Dubai is the most liberal and westernized area in the entire region. As a result, any business which relies on expertise from Europe and North America has decided to locate their base of operations there. Other GCC states all have business in Dubai because of the phenomenal investment opportunities. If there is one place in the world to be right now, its Dubai. Being GCC means that you get 100% ownership. Foreign companies either need GCC sponsorship or they need to set up in the Free Zone.
Pooning in Dubai - I would never do it. you get life for smoking a joint there - why even bother pooning? Just hook up with one of the million lonely expats that live there.
Terrorism is a rarity in the GCC... the governments won't stand for it. Don't fall into the consiracy theories about payoffs and such. Its a safe place and the terrorists know who the real enemy is. Plus, should they ever attack - life as they (the terrorists) know it is over. They would be exterminated in the blink of an eye. It would cause a very large disruption in international financing of their growth and basically - all of the expats would be too scared to go. Bad for business.
And when there is an alternative to oil, you will see the forward thinking Arab states will still be prosperous. The backwards one... they'll be yesterdays news.

How do you explain terrorism in Saudi Arabia, one of the most repressive and controlling coountries in the world? I know some of it is state-sanctioned by the extremist Wahabis, but there has also been an ongoing war against the Saudis by small factions of terrorists.
