What the fawk is up with the driving in the Lower Mainland? I've driven all over the world, and while Turkey and Afghanistan rank up on another scale, in the so-called civilized world I've never seen such bad driving as here. Speeds in Europe may be higher, but the skill level and consideration are so much higher. There's an orderly chaos. Here, it's just nuts. Last night a guy on Hwy 1 drove his car down the grass median. Last week THREE times I saw vehicles run red lights downtown AFTER the traffic had started on the green. In a parking lot in Richmond I saw a fistfight over a space and my own car was boxed in by improperly parked SUV's. If you can even park the big fucker, why buy it? On the freeways I've never understood the "pack" driving where everyone drives as fast as they can to get in line behind everyone else and ensuring a multi-car pileup if anything goes wrong.

Something of a scandal a few years back when it became public knowledge that a large segment of the Lower Mainland population had purchased a driver's license, rather than actually being able to drive.
Many of the locals feel a need to have sixteen year olds with no experience driving top end beamers, and other similar high performance vehicles.

Hehehehehehehe..well well, finally some people are starting to see the results of multi culture thinking, in other words,,,,do not integrate but keep your own culture, values and all other habits when here, to hell with the Canadians, they are only here to help pay the bills.......
Just to back up what the lovely (and ohhh, so talented) Paige said, nobody was targeted by my comment.
It is a fact that there were legal prodceedings against at least one Motor Vehicle License Inspector some years ago. He took bribes, and gave out licenses.
It is a fact that far too many inexperienced drivers are driving vehicles which are far, far more capable than they are. It is a fact that many (not all) of these inexperienced drivers with high powered vehicles drive like idiots.
Are they all immigrants? No. Are some of them? Yes.
And, finally, it is a fact that Vancouver City Council, back in the sixties, decided that there would be no freeways within Vancouver. With the exception of the tunnel on the far northeastern corner of the city, to this day there remain no freeways within Vancouver. What we do call a freeway, through Burnaby, Coquitlam, and farther east, is a joke. Designed in the fifties, it was maxed out on real capacity twenty years ago.
And Paige, I look forward to backing you up anytime. Or fronting you. Or......well you know. Keep well.

While I can't comment on the situation in Vancouver, I can at least point out that people without the ability to drive in rain/snow are common throughout the world. Never did figure it out because it's really easy (although I have to admit I learned to drive in Alaska, which gives me an advantage), and I've seen a huge pile-up when the fastest people were going was 30 km/h on sanded streets. That moment was probably the first time in my life I could honestly say "WTF" and not rationalize an answer to myself.
Everyone who drives slower than me is a moron, and everyone who drives faster than me is a maniac.

VM - I love Turkey and one tends to drive just like them when you're there. When you're in a Turkish Fiat with no odometer, speedometer, door handles or hand brake you have to stop every so often and ask if it's smart doing 120 km hr around blind curves while passing trucks and buses, though.
In defense to some people at red lights when it turns green:
I was at at intersection and an old elderman ...(always respect elders) was having a tough time crossing the street so of course the light turns yellow and he is only half way ... and yeah I am in a hurry like the next guy but .. I realize this guy may have fought in a war or been a good smaritan ..just old that has a problem walking ..and yes the intersection is very long ..He left when it was Walk. .as the light turns yellow
I know he wont make it so I just wait patiently at the white line so I dont give the guy a heart attack by putting my bumper at his ass... and some lame horn guy lays into me with his horn full blast as he goes by gives me the finger..
Some people should look at the sorroundings before they lay the horn down .. what did he think I that I had nothing better to do than hang out at an intersection ..
And PS never lay your horn unless you think you can take the guy your blowing your steam at ..if the guy would have past and hit the old man he would have got some ...

My pet peeve also is those damn Motorcycles.... When your out having lunch on a patio or starbucks etc.. and some dude has to rev his motorcyle so loud that peoples hearing aids whistle .. Their excuse is they need to let others know they are there..but c'mon its getting absurd
My fave is "The Weaver" - guys (and increasingly girls) who weave in and out of traffic maybe four times in a block only to finish at the same red light you're at. Not only dangerous, but stupid and pointless.
Also - has anyone noticed heading south on Oak from King Edward to the Bridge - if you go the speed limit you stop at every red light. If you speed, you make the lights. It's institutionalized encouragement to speed.
