Dr. Laura's N-Word Rant: Radio Host Apologizes For Offensive Language (Article)

Dr. Laura Schlessinger has apologized after a shocking rant on her radio show this week during which she said the n-word 11 times over the course of five minutes.

In conversation Tuesday with a black female caller who was complaining about her white husband's racist friends and their use of the word, Schlessinger said:

Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO and listen to a black comic, and all you hear is n****, n*****, n*****. I don't get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it's a horrible thing. But when black people say it, it's affectionate. It's very confusing.

<object width='320' height='260'><param name='movie' value='http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/flash/player.swf'></param><param name='flashvars' value='config=http://mediamatters.org/embed/cfg2?id=201008120037'></param><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always'></param><param name='allownetworking' value='all'></param><embed src='http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/flash/player.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' flashvars='config=http://mediamatters.org/embed/cfg2?id=201008120037' allowscriptaccess='always' allowfullscreen='true' width='320' height='260'></embed></object>

After a break, the caller said she was appalled by Schlessinger's use of the word.

"Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians," she said. "My dear, the point I am trying to make...we've got a black man as president and we've got more complaining about racism than ever. I think that's hilarious."

Schlessinger and the caller then got into an exchange about the use of the word:

CALLER: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word?
DR. LAURA: It depends how it's said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it's ok.
CALLER: But you're not black, they're not black, my husband is white.
DR. LAURA: Oh, I see, so a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can't do much about that.
CALLER: I can't believe someone like you is on the radio spewing out the n***** word, and I hope everybody heard it.
DR. LAURA: I didn't spew out the n***** word!
CALLER: You said "n*****, n*****, n*****" and I hope everybody heard it.
DR. LAURA: Yes they did, and I'll say it again: n*****, n*****, n***** is what you hear on HBO.
[Crosstalk]
DR. LAURA: Why don't you let me finish a sentence? Don't take things out of context. Don't NAACP me, leave them in context.

"If you're that hypersensitive about color and don't have a sense of humor, don't marry outside of your race," Schlessinger said after hanging up with the caller.

<object width='320' height='260'><param name='movie' value='http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/flash/player.swf'></param><param name='flashvars' value='config=http://mediamatters.org/embed/cfg2?id=201008120038'></param><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always'></param><param name='allownetworking' value='all'></param><embed src='http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/flash/player.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' flashvars='config=http://mediamatters.org/embed/cfg2?id=201008120038' allowscriptaccess='always' allowfullscreen='true' width='320' height='260'></embed></object>

She apologized the next day, opening her show with an apology.

"Yesterday, I did the wrong thing," she said. "I didn't intend to hurt people, but I did. And that makes it the wrong thing to have done. I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the "n" word all the way out - more than one time. And that was wrong. I'll say it again - that was wrong."

Schlessinger said she "was so upset [she] could not finish the show."

"I pulled myself off the air at the end of the hour," she said. "I had to finish the hour, because 20 minutes of dead air doesn't work. I am very sorry. And it just won't happen again."

Dr. Laura is a bitch, plain and simple. She's so high on herself and her opinion of everything.

This is not a complicated issue. My SO comes from a town that she left because she hated it. She says things about it that I couldn't say because I would come over as an elitist looking down on people from that town. Everyone understands this and has the maturity to address and negotiate the issue at that level. It operates the same way about race - and about women - and any other specific group but it is when it involves a big group rather than a town everyone becomes very childish - like this fool Dr Laura - and starts behaving like 7 year olds.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Some people are just toooooooooo SENSITIVE. Do names really hurt you. WOW. Why do certain individuals race, color , gender etc.. Get away with calling people "whatever" they want and others are discriminated for doing so . I m a Heinz 57 and i Don't give a Rat's ass , what people call me. Either you say it in front of me or behind my back. If you're going to say it. You will say it either way. So i might as well hear about it, from your mouth. Why are people so sensitive? It's just a friggen word. So what. Everyone's entitled to say what they want and everyone else is entitled to take it or leave it.
If you take it as insult, Oh well. It isn't the first time you're going to get insulted.

Bottom Line is>>>>>>>>
Take it in your Mouth and just Swallow! LoL Or Wherever else the sun don't shine.

I don't know this Dr. Slinger , whatever, from a hole in the ground. But who cares what she has to say. Brothers are always calling each other n grs. Does it make Right or Wrong.

So call me what ever you want. Just don't call me late for dinner.

LOL

Respect...

For me it's a matter of respect. Not all black people use the word or are ok with others using the word. The history behind the word and everything (negative) it has represented is enough for me not to have any desire (or need) to use it.

"Freedom of speech" allows us to say many things we still choose not to say. That you can say it, or that it doesn't bother some people, doesn't mean it's good idea to say it or that it makes it right.

I've got mixed feeling about this word, but basically it's only means something if you want it to mean something. Meaning if you don't react to the word, it looses it's power and becomes meaningless.

I honestly think that's the best way of dealing with it. It's not like the words asshole or something that is directed equally to everyone, it's specific to a race..so ignoring it would render it meaningless.

At least that's my opinion, course if I were black and had this word slung at me for a couple of decades perhaps I would have a different take on it.

I use the word when talking to black friends, and they use some choice words in reply and no offence is taken by either side, though the reaction of people around you can be quite interesting.
There is however a geographic limit, to this. The Americans have no problem with this, everybody else does, that's black that is.

I agree with "Rod the bod" on this point. Blacks may call each other "N******" as it's an "ingroup" thing. By illustration, I've heard Jews and Ukranians do the same but only amongst each other (I was a fly on the wall). So it's a matter of propriety. Laura was/is not part of the ingroup and the context was inappropriate as well.

On this subject, however, some of you might be familiar with the late comedian and genius, Lenny Bruce. He shocked people when he ranted in public on about Negroes, Jews, Poles, Italians and other ethnic groups and his display was considered by the authorities at the time as exceedingly offensive and perhaps unlawful. His point was, however, that if he repeated these slang terms often enough, they would lose their power of offending. So he was making a social statement and attempting to be a conduit for social change. Readers may see how (formerly) offensive words such as "f**k" are now used quite liberally and have lost much of their sting.

Hey "uncleg", tell us a bit about the "Earl" to whet our appetite and and curiosity.

He's an author and political analyst. He posted a piece on The Huffington Post titled: Dr. Laura got it right about the N word.

Oh ya, he's black.

I don't use racist terms of any kind. I was not raised that way. I was raised to think and to question, not to hate. Racism hurts my soul. I have many friends that have interracial children and it breaks my heart that in this day and age, they are subjected to ignorance of this magnitude. I don't like it when people use racism against themselves. I won't hang out with them, as I will cringe every time they speak, or spend half the time correcting and lecturing. Children around will hear that talk and then think its normal.

Every year is better than the year before it. One day we will all be recognized for who we are, rather than the color of our skin, the shape of our eyes, or who we fall in love with.

I've seen Chris Rock live, I think he's great. He's a comedian that is politicial, intelligent & uses humour to make his point. Using certain words is an absolute no no to some people but I suppose it's all about context and who you are with. SP is a "correct term" for a prostitute. My ex used to use the term whore all the time and it bothered me because it seemed so derogatory yet she referred to herself as that. After some time I realized she was cool with it, so why wouldn't I be? There was just a time and place to use it and it was all context.
Chris Rock or Dave chappelle. Two dudes with a great perspective. I'm sure it was a riot. (not literally, but...well you know what I mean :) )
