The end of free mp3's...

There are less songs available on Kazaa Lite and Limewire than a few years ago. Download what you can now before everything is on a fee basis.

all those progs suck

limewire, bearshare, kazza they're all chock full of spyware and virii and whatnot. google bittorrent, azureus and start reading the forums at afterdawn.com and anything and everything that you want is at your fingertips. take care though, this type of filesharing is reaching it's peak (if it hasn't already.) and you'll soon have the same results you're having with the p2p progs that are failing you right now

hi
picard.ytmnd.com
Check out http://www.newzbin.com

USEnet indexing service. Then d/l either XNEWS at xnews.newsguy.com, or Grabit at shemes.com .. or for insanely fast d/l get newsleecher at www.newsleecher.com

Either subcribe to a monthly sevice out of the USA such as http://newshosting.com ($15/mth unlimited.. no censorship) OR just set up your local shaw provider servers as this:

set up for 2 connections each. leave password/login blank:

news.vc.shawcable.net
news.ek.shawcable.net
news.wk.shawcable.net
news.ok.shawcable.net
hews.ca.shawcable.net
news.gv.shawcable.net

If you do the above with newsleecher, you can d/l entire DVDs in about 1hr. it's blazing fast. the only problem is newsleecher is trial-ware, so you either have to crack it at serials.ws or buy it. If you try to crack it, you have to set up your windows 'hosts' file to deny all access to www.newsleecher.com and your router if you have one.

USEnet is uncensored, and nearly impossible to monitor.

If you want to pir8 TV programs, check out http://www.tvnzb.com/nzb
All you do is find the program you want, d/l the tiny .NZB file and either Grabit or Newsleecher will automatically start d/l the files.

Stuff to keep in mind:
Shaw only retains 26hrs of news 'headers'. Meaning they delete everything older than that, which is why a US-based monthly service is better.

You need the program Quickpar to fix screwed up d/l's http://www.quickpar.org.uk/

i like limewire. it'll actually tell you if a file is corrupted. i dont have any of the viruses that i used to have with kazaa. im at 1700 songs from limewire and it is all good. there are songs on there that i thought that nobody even remembered let alone had on their computers. anyone remember "The West End Girls"? i found it on limewire.

Bittorrent

I'll second bittorrent:

www.bittorrent.com for more info

it's a little different to use than what you're probably used to, but once you figure out what is going on, it's not tough.

I never get corrupt files, no spyware, HUGE array of files(music, movie, programs, etc) available.

$15/mth pales in comparison to me ripping 2 DVDs a week, a handfull of SVCDs, games, tons of software and shitloads of TV shows since I don't have cable. If you are in British Columbia and use Telus for Torrent downloading, you'll receive a nice friendly legal letter of copyright infringement because torrent sites are full of RIAA fake seeds. 60% of Photoshop d/l's i've seen were seeded by Adobe to catch pirates. Now, being that you live in Canada you can for now just throw those legal letters away but who wants to be on the radar anyways.

Also, if you use shaw, bittorrent connections have long been throttled to make way for Voice over IP. Check dslforums.com if you dont' believe me.. shaw techs have been cutting Torrent connections in half at the router level for some time now. Screw 3/kb a second when you can leech the same thing in a more secure/anonymous environment at 900/k

This of course until Torrent releases their new encrypted platform sometime next year, but yeah still you are sharing your IP and broadcasting your activities to everybody.

Finally check out what's happening to various torrent reactor listings:

Torrant all the way!!
I actually find BitTorrent a bit iffy, simply because of the hassle of trying to find torrents. From a technical standpoint as well BitTorrent still has the problem of centralization, in that there still has to be a single computer seeding a torrent, so if law enforcement decides that BitTorrent is the next Kazaa (which I think we will see within the next year or so), then it can still be targeted relatively easily.

I would *strongly* recommend using the completely decentralized networks like eDonkey/eMule or Gnutella.

The program I would most recommend is Shareaza, it can connect to both Gnutella1 and Gnutella2 networks, as well as the eDonkey network. As a bonus it can also handle torrent files as well for those of you who are hooked on BitTorrent. And as a final plus, it's open source, spyware free. IIRC, it's currently Windows only at this point, so you Mac (or Linux) users may be out of luck.

Check it out at www.shareaza.com

Someone else asked about the status of file swapping in Canada. I'm not an expert, and don't know if the latest proposed changes to copyright law have taken effect yet, but traditionally file swapping in Canada has been legal largely due to the notion of "private copying". In Canada (unlike in some countries) you have the legal right to make private copies of a work, and thus file sharing is largely looked upon as an exercise of this right. So this means you can walk over to your buddies place, throw in a CDR and burn his collection of MP3's completely legally so long as *you* yourself is the one burning the disc.

My understanding about the new proposed changes to copyright law are that it will make it illegal to make available copyrighted works to others in electronic mediums. You still have the right ot make private copies, but if it's illegal to make copyrighted files available to others then P2P will (for all intents and purposes) become illegal as generally you can't use P2P networks without making available some content (hence the peer to peer moniker).

If I understand it correctly, then I am a fan of this legislation, as it helps to prevent illegal copying of music (thus helping to ensure artists get compensated for their work), but (and this is the important part that many other countries don't seem to understand) doesn't hurt *legal* P2P file transfers (ie - making available works that are in the public domain, or works for which you own the copyright).

That's funny, I'm with Telus, and I live in BC, yet I've never had any problems whatsoever (other than the fact that standard DSL is slower than cable).

Been using newsreader called Agent for about six weeks. Cracked. Works great, can download multiple albums or individual songs, just use your default news server provided by your ISP.

My favorite newsgroups are:

alt.binaries.sounds.mps.complete_cd
alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.rape <-- great place to find hardcore bondage/torture flics
alt.binaries.multimedia.erotica tons of adult files, includes full collections of bangbus, asstrafic, inbedwithfaith, and many more.

All above is free, enjoy. :)
