Some do, some don't:

* I have no problem with the donation up front to ladies with good reputations.
* Sometimes I do half up front and half at the end if we agree that the session could run overtime.

Perhaps it's yet another example of YMMV: if you show up well-turned-out, and you're polite and engaging, it may be quite reasonable for her to not bother asking up front. If you're setting off her spidey-sense she may very well go on the defensive, asking for the donation first and keeping an eye on the clock.
