This is the latest scam. Or at least a rather more complex version of it. The standard form is for the scammer to buy something online, send a certified check in an amount well above the selling price, and have the seller send back the difference after they've cashed the cheque and taken their share. Problem is, the cheque is bogus. It takes 2-3 weeks for a cheque to be verified by the bank. So in other words, in your case, you cash the cheque, take your 2 grand, and the remaining 3 grand goes to his accomplice. The 3 grand is their take. The cheque turns up a couple weeks later as bogus, and you are on the hook for the full 5 grand.

I strongly suggest you call the police, talk to someone in their computer crimes division, and ensure they get access to the email, including the header info. They will tell you what you should do with the email. Burn those fuckers.

Sounds like a twist on the old Nigerian banking scam. Guy sends you a bank draft for more than the agreed amount wanting you to deposit, and withdraw the over charge then send it back to him. A couple of days or weeks later, your bank finds that the cheque or draft he has sent you bounces and you are stuck with reimbursing the bank for the full amount of the original bank draft.

One word - delete.

I told him I dont take cheques and cash is the only universal currency I aknowledge. Haven't got an email in weeks now.

:D

It sounds like this is not a personal cheque, but a bank issued money order
which may be as good as cash:

"a bank certified cashiers check of $5,000"

I'd check with my bank manager whether or not that is the case. And if he
says it is as good as cash, i'd ask for a signed statement from him saying
that that is the case. A draft from a reputable bank would be necessary,
preferably the one you use.

Otherwise the emailer should come up with something better, like a wire
directly into your account or Western Union.

In my experience it is personal checks that take two weeks to clear, and
i've heard of some that take longer.

These can be counterfeited or faked same as cheques and often fool people for just this reason.

Here's the kicker there is no time limit for return a counterfeit or fraudulent item. It can take weeks for the chargeback to the victims account by which point if you have been taken you have sent the "difference" to the scammer and you are s.o.l. for that amount.

Never take money orders unless it is from a trusted client

Even if they are not asking for cash back - do you really want to do a 2 day freebie?

If they are serious about wanting your services, they can have the money order made out to themselves (they keep the difference right off the bat) and they can SWIFT you your requested amount. SWIFT is fully secure, and can't be revoked once you have verification that it is in your account.

I would guess her bank could call the issuing bank or a computer banking
data base or something and check on the legitimacy of the bank draft.
This might be done by the numbers on the draft, the name & address
of the sender thereon, and the date of issuance, etc. If they can't figure
out from this type of info that it's a forgery, or not, how would they ever?

If i could forge drafts so well that i could send one to her & she could
cash it & get me only 3G out of 5G, then why not just get my crime
friends to cash it for me and get the whole 5G. Or do it myself.

But, again, to feel more comfortable about the whole thing, i would
ask my bank manager to sign a statement that the draft is legit. And
perhaps explain the situation to him.

Here is the standard reply that I give to those sorts of scam e-mails:

Dear XXXXX,

Please forward the money order to:

Jodie Smith
c/o Vancouver Police Department Financial Crime Section
312 Main Street, Vancouver BC V6A 2T2

My associates there will be happy to process the money order as per your request, and will telephone you in order to arrange the details of our meeting. I have already forwarded your e-mails to them, so they will be expecting to receive mail from you shortly.

Sincerely,
Jodie

That usually shuts them up right quick and removes me from their "target" list.
