Does anyone here drive a BMW or Mercedes Benz? What's the big difference between the 2? Which would be considered better?

How much more expensive is labour and parts? Are they reliable cars?

Im on 2nd Mercedes ML 350 and I would say reliability is not as good as my other
cheap Japanese car that I was driving while I was in school. There wasnt much to go break
The dealer rate for MB repair/service is not cheap, I believe $100 for 1 hr.

I had an opportunity to drive BMW X5 (V6 and V8)and 5xx series, including the all wheel drive,
Audi A6/Q7 and Mercedes ML550/E320
and I personally liked BMW best.
The test was not just easy drive around a block.
It was driving a set course at an airport, driving and breaking HARD
I was told by the organizer to jam on the gas and "SLAM" on the breaks.
Can you believe I was jeered when my car didnt screech?

BMW X5 (V8) was an amazing vehicle to drive and the best in its class
in my humble opinion. The power and handling was awesome, surprising for its taller stance.
V8 had a lot of power for low end torque to push me against the back of driver's seat.
The 'feel' you get was very responsive, so much that the car and I was like one.

If I had the opportunity to drive all different cars, before I bought my 2nd car,
I wouldnt have bought MB 350.
I bought Mercedes 1st time because I had a tunnel vision to buy ML320
BUT my next car will be a BMW.

MB has very nice ride, softer than BMW, yet perform when it is pushed to the limit.
Mercedes came very close 2nd and Audi wasnt as good as I thought.

MB and BMW has good quality product with some prestige aspect and
if you can afford to drive one, I say... GO FOR IT!!
Since I am still rather younger, I like the younger image of BMW and little alive ride over nice easy driving of MB.

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine?

The porcupine has the pricks on the outside.:D

I learned to drive on a Mercedes, and I've driven a couple since then. I've also driven a 3 and 5 series BMW.

Both are great brands, but Mercedes has suffered some major set backs in reliability over the past five years. (Don't take my word for it, check out the consumerreports.org reviews).

The CLKs and the ML series have been listed as poor in terms of reliability.

The BMWs, on the other hand, have maintained a high consistency over the years.

It's hard to compare the two unless you're looking at specific models.

That's my $.02

The 2007 328i Coupé is one helluva car. 300bhp twin turbo in-line six cylinder engine has been voted best new engine this year.

It can give most cars a run for their money. It is pretty much on par with last year's M3's performance.
Go take it for a test ride, and if you can afford it, you will be one happy driver.

I've driven pretty much all of the high end BMWs and Mercedes. It just comes down to preference. The quality is similar.

The nice thing about either is the companies make everything so convenient. If anything happens they'll pick up the car and give you a replacement. The cars tell you when the oil needs to be changed or if the tire pressure is too low.

At the lower end of the BMWs and Mercedes the quality is still there but the perks decrease.

Now that is a load of bull. My bimmer tells me I don't need an oil change until I rack up 12,000 miles (not kilometres - mine's American) on it. I called the dealership and asked them about that, and they said the synthetic oil plus the advanced engine technology preclude the need to do oil changes every 3000 miles. I checked the oil at 7000 miles and it was a dark brown and sludgy. So I went used COMMON SENSE and changed the oil/filter immediately at an independent BMW mechanic, and have done so ever since every 3000 miles.

As for MB, they've got a lot of nice cars and have been trying to move to a younger market, but they still don't appeal to me like BMWs do. Also, I like the less luxury but highly "technical" image that BMW has over MB. For example, the 645 convertible feels like a god damned personal jet when you sit inside, whereas MBs just look like luxury cars. It also looks menacing. I also love the sound of the BMW exhaust system. There's nothing like the sound of the engine roaring when you hit the pedal combined with the mad rush of sudden speed. I hope to buy one of these next year:

I got a 740 5 years ago for my SO. It was one year old with 3000K on it from the dealer in Richmond. The Portugese consulate had leased it and it was about 20K less than current year. I Had driven it around the block and knew it was the one.

You can set a glass of water on the hood at idle and hardly see a ripple. It is so smooth and the power band is so wide. As to quality, there is 90K on it now and aside from a new stereo when on warranty there has been no majors beside regular maintenance.

The oil change is at 30,000 K as a synthetic is used and it never gets dirty. The cost last week for oil and spark plugs etc was $900 with taxes.
I had to replace the radiator at 80K for about $1000 and thought that to be high and unusual but my friend who has a 540 a year older had to do it as well for about the same cost.

L / 8
A / 10
S / 8

Will repeat if I can find another in a few years.

I can't believe I just blew my 300th post on a car review!

In my own imagination!!
Okay I used to own a 318i................

...................BMW Red 4 door. Lowered, racing wheels, blacked out windows, 5 speed, black leather interior, $6000.00 dollar Alpine Pheonix Gold car stereo. It was a 94 bought it in 97. It had at the time only 56.000 original k on it. Best car I ever owned bar none. Great milage, great look, drove like a dream. One Calgary winter it dropped to like 45 below with wind chill. I parked it outside and no block heater. I thought it would never start. It did and alot of vehicles with heaters did not. If i stay in Canada for a long time I will buy another Beemer for sure!!! Low end, cheap or not it was still a Beemer and thats all that counts.

Great mileage? On a '94? This is my 2nd one of a much later year, but my first one was a '95 convert. That car had HORRIBLE gas mileage, as does my current one. I thought all bimmers had uniformly terrible mileage. I mean, I just took a trip to Calgary doing from 70mph to 130mph on the fastest highway route there (using kokihalla highway) and it ate almost 3 tanks of gas (premium fuel, total cost = $240)!!!! I could have flown for cheaper!

Maybe you should take it to Nixon Automotive in Burnaby? They're Bimmer specialists. You might have saved a bundle.

My ford has 398,000 km and still gets me from site to site. Never show em you have money....they want to raise their rates or reduce yours.

Thanks for all the great info guys. A close relative is thinking of buying one of the 2 listed. I know my cars and am planning on becoming a mechanic and Lexus is better in the long run then both of the companies mentioned. I know some Japanese cars are more reliable but they don't have the prestige of the German luxury cars.

I will be driving the vehicle and am prob the youngest perb member(i've never seen an sp). The BMW it is and thanks again for the info guys.

If anyone else has any more input please post

BMW 735il driver here

Greetings,

I have an early 90s 735il (long version: highway cruiser) and it is a superb ride at a relatively low cost. I bought it 5 years ago for under 20% of its original retail price, with low mileage and all documentation and maintenance records. Since then I have had extensive brake, steering and suspension replacements, fixed the sun roof etc etc, but the cost has still been well below the cost of buying and maintaining a new small (Japanese or Korean) car, with next to no depreciation. Maintenance is reasonable at specialist independant German car garages. Insurance is perhaps $800 more than for a regular car. I figure this car will go another 5-10 years with moderate maintenance costs, giving me a top quality, fine looking ride for very little total cost. Mileage is not great but I drive it so little it doesn't warrant buying a different car.

I have a friend who recently acquired a 335i - I'm just wondering if anyone else have any recent experience with the 330 series cars - especially the xi versions.
I do, but not the xi.
