Just saw a new Dodd's Furniture ad. Looks like he is banking on the success of Slumdog and a new interest in Bollywood and Indian culture. His ads crack me up and I love them for that. Next time I go to Victoria I am totally checking out that store.

So, Perberts, you like or no likes?

your mom says hi.
i think the adds are hilarious.

they were better ten years ago though when i first moved out here. some of the local adds i miss though were the ones for "the captain" and his pawn shops.

big fat captain though, not slimmed down captain.

we used to have a fair amount of local colour home grown business here, sadly it all seems to be drying up.

The latest one has some cuties, maybe they work at the store and have a little BJ room out back for clients such as yourself who want to "test" out the sofas.

anyone remeber Cal Worthington? those were great, yet stupid commercials.
i worked for a supplier of Dodd's, his son told us that his dad loved doing those hokey commercials. it never really about a good commercial, it's about being memorable.

Cal Worthington was a genius salesman & a pretty good showman to boot!

Marketing Truths

I hate, hate, hate personally-shot, crappy, family "I won't be undersold", cultural ripoff ads. Each time I make a mental note to avoid the shop at all costs.

But what really matters is... do they work? does it make viewers want to buy? does it help viewers remember the name of the shop?

does it work for you?

First off a number of years ago I was standing in the customs line up coming back into Canada from an overseas trip when low and behold the guy standing next too me is the Old man from the Dodd's furniture ads.. We both look at each other smile and say at the same time "I won't be undersold!"

So we talked for probably about 30 minutes until we finally got through the line up at Vancouver International. He was returning from na visit to India. I met his wife very nice lady. Very smart businessman though.

I have met him once on the ferry when he was eating right next to me... His commercials may be cheesy however he is a very honest business man and his store is doing very well. In fact he told me he has not felt any recession as for his business goes it is booming.

good for him

The Great Divide
Gordy Dodd

For years and years Mr. Dodd has put on that Thanksgiving dinner for the indigent. Fed thousands of people.

Although he's in excellent health today, he has recently survived a very close shave, healthwise. A couple of years ago he had an embolism on his aorta which was misdiagnosed here and created an emergency life and death thing while he was visiting the USA for a family wedding. A year after that he had multiple bypass surgery.

Came from very humble beginnings in a small border town in Bengal. Always a very humble, approachable man. His son Love (yes that's his real name), who has worked for many years in the business is effectively the manager now. But it's still quite the family operation and most of their employees are very long term, having been there for many years.
