Settle this softwood lumber dispute and pay us back our bllions or do we have to get tough with them? And is there a way we can get tough with them without them crushing us like bugs? For them to lose a dozen decisions on this and still talk like they're right its obvious they have no respect for us or any agreements they sign.

Make love not war

The US could say that we have Weapons of Mass Destruction and invade.

What could those weapons be, well how about the CBC for starters.

Stephen Harper is a weapon of mass destruction for the Conservatives.

The could also say that we have terrorists. The Bloc de Quebec.

I say we surrender before they declare war on us...

In short, no.

The US is use to having it's own way and if others don't like it; it does not bother many Americas much. What is the worst that can happen to us, others won't like us? Just a minute they don't anyway.

US only respects those that are New York in your face type of people.

Canada is more like the battered wife. They complain about the way they are treated, but they keep coming back for more.

I am always amazed at the bargaining strength Canada has and how little they use their strength. Instead they approach the US the way one would approach another Canadian. What is fair for everyone? What is the win win resolution?

If I was negotiating for Canada, I would approach it very differently.

- I would immediately raise the price of electrical power being exported to the US. I know there are power contracts in place that fix the price, but screw you. Pay my price or I will cut you off. Let's watch the New England States go dark as the Canadian power is shut off.

The lumber. I would say we are no longer exporting logs. Hardwood softwood I don't give a shit. Take dimensional lumber, or don't take anything. The US housing boom is driving the entire US economy. No one will screw with an interruption of the supply of wood. 90% of the house are constructed with fir or hemlock. Where do you think that wood comes from?

Natural gas. Canada has huge reserves of natural gas. US needs that natural gas.

Water. The US needs large amounts of potable water. Canada has huge surplus of water. So think like the drug dealers. Supply water for free for a short time. Once everyone is addicted to the water imports then slap huge increases on the cost of water.

But that is just me talking. A know nothing American. Canada needs to be liked and by giving in (like the battered wife) you think you will have peace and we will all just get along.

An excellent analysis of what we could do that would be a direct blow to the gonads, LuckyDog. Don't forget the tar sands in Alberta. With the price of oil soaring, it is now profitable to extract the oil from there and it's just one more bit of leverage we'd have. But of course we won't do any of it. We're too damn nice. :(

This is IF the Canadian economy and her citizens could withstand the layoff's and other havoc that no longer exporting these resources would cause.

I know that water is covered under NAFTA so that would be immune. Possible the other resources like Gas, oil & electricity are as well.

You assume that the American market is the ONLY market that we export to. Last time I checked there were over a billion in China and then there's the rest of the Asian market. They'd probable like more of our lumber and possibly our oil too...

Kinda like how Softwood Lumber was "immune".

True about China. I don't think that they have to worry about wood like Japan does though. IIRC, Canada does more business with the US than anyone else (and Vis a Vis).

True, but if we were to suddenly have a lot more lumber sitting around to export, I'm sure the Asian market would want a piece of it.

Only thing missing from luckydog's post was OIL, and cutting off that supply to the USA.
That should guarantee a kick to the nads... :)
...but will likely result in American tanks in Ottawa the next day. :(

your mom says hi.
just to add to their arrogance in their outright refusal to honnor treaties that were signed in good faith by both parties but now they are pumping polluted water in a river that drains in one of our huge lakes. that lake being lake winnipeg, the fucking arrogance of these people is un-equaled.

not only that but i read in "24" and "metro" today that one of their own judges from california says that their war on drugs could not be done any worse and that canada is progressive in helping the problem and that the u.s. should keep their nose the fuck out of our bussiness.

You, my friend, are exactly correct.

Too bad this Administration has lost so much respect in the world due to years of its unilateralism - otherwise there would be far less outrage regarding their disregarding of 4% of NAFTA trade (while the other 96% is without problem) - from which incidentally any rulings are non-binding!

There is no recourse for Canadians through NAFTA as a result. Only way out is to widen the trade war, as you expounded. Canadians better be prepared for a few years of hardship, and realise that the United States does not have friends - it has interests.

To say the other 96% is without problem isn't really true its just their lobbyists haven't been as successful. They've certainly been trying to do the same thing with grain and hogs

We'll see how much of a team player Ralphy baby is when Cheney hits Alberta to kiss his ass. And yes, that's exactly what the fat, bald, unscrupulous little motherfucker's going to do. Alberta has oil, plenty of it, and China wants it as bad or even more than the U.S. does so lets start a bidding process. A perfect scenario is that he's told to fuck right off and dies of a heart attack on Canadian soil. Hopefully they then hold a procession so that we can all stop over to pay our respects by taking a dump on his corrupt remains and wipe our ass with the American flag.
