In another thread human cloning was touched on.

So what do you think about human cloning....

It is a good thing when it is used to cure human flaws.....

Is it a good thing if it improves the human species through gene manipulation.....

To be honest....I do not know if this is a good thing or a bad thing....

But I do know the generation behind me will need to deal with this question.

I dont think we're ready to deal with the social or ethical implications of cloning. So to answer your question I do not support cloning for humans however I would like to see it available for animals a lot more readily.

The ethical questions are mind boggling.

For example, if you had your SO cloned, and then had sex with the clone, would that be cheating.....

I don't support cloning on any level. Stem cell research is an interesting direction for cloning to take but I agree that we are not ready to deal with the implications yet.

There's always someone in the wings that waiting to exploit the technology for their own gain.

as a person with multiple disabilities i support the stem cell research and the benefits it could have in my lifetime ... it is possible to harvest cells from the embilical cord and now they are able to even harvest cells from adults that can be used to fight diseases or cure disabilities.

do i support making a human just to harvest organs? no. and that has been done even without involving cloning.

cloning humans is a bad idea...

cloning cells to help humans are a great idea....

Cloning humans will just lead to corruption and money power.

There are many reasons that there should be some control and regulation of human cloning. Because the bible says it's wrong is not one of them. I don't think the authors of the bible had any position on cloning, and besides, prohibiting anything that may produce life is a little like endorsing birth control. Chew on that you hypocrital fundamentalist bastards.

Cloning body parts and the stem cell growth thing is cool.

i wonder if a human being can be cloned, is that person's mind also a clone...............or just the body?
Just the body, it would be like having an identical twin. Therein lies one of the issues with cloning of humans. Would the clone be considered a human being in their own right or property of the donor?

If I want to clone myself and produce a heart that I need to survive then I should not be stopped. All I need is the money to clone myself and a country that will let me.

If I have to kill my clone to get the heart why would that be anybody else’s business?

This is on par with a woman’s right to choose. As long as I kill the clone before it is removed from the incubator it is no ones business but mine.

Yup - I'm in favour of therapeutic cloning... "Therapeutic cloning is based on the concept that the best way to get stem cells that are a perfect match for a patient -- thereby preventing immune rejection -- will be to create a clone of that patient, develop the embryo to around 100 cells, then remove the stem cells. Researchers consider the technique promising for treating spinal cord injuries and Alzheimer's disease".

The official Canadian position/law does not allow for therapeutic cloning: March 2004 - passed by the Canadian Senate without amendment / officially became law on March 27, 2004 as it received royal assent

BILL C-6 - An Act respecting assisted human reproduction and related research

The bill bans human cloning, sex selection, commercial surrogate motherhood contracts, the sale of sperm and eggs, and sets out rules on human embryonic stem cell research… will also establish the Assisted Human Reproduction Agency of Canada, to establish a regulatory body to oversee the area of assisted human reproduction (AHR) and related research in order to protect and promote the health and safety of Canadians using AHR technologies.

Bernard Siegel, president of the Genetics Policy Institute: "While it is commendable that Canada will ban reproductive cloning, they are off-base in prohibiting therapeutic cloning. Some of their brightest scientists will be compelled to find labs elsewhere. Canada loses the opportunity to advance the potentially greatest medical advance of our time, one that promises understanding of mankind's worst afflictions and the regeneration of tissue without rejection."

Genetics Policy Institute

"flexible" = derivations from fertility clinic donations only, excluding somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), and often under certain restrictions - "Research is permitted only on remaining embryos no longer needed for reproduction." Countries in this category include Canada, Finland, Spain, The Netherlands, Taiwan…

"permissive" = various embryonic stem cell derivation techniques including somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), also called research or therapeutic cloning. SCNT is the transfer of a cell nucleus from a somatic or body cell into an egg from which the nucleus has been removed. Countries in this category include the United Kingdom, Belgium, Israel, India, China…
