Hi guys! I could really use your help in a letter writing campaign. It will literally take you three minutes. You can just copy and paste it. I’ll include the letter below, as well as a list of people to send it to.

Chantel was my cousin. And even though we are fair skinned, we did grow up being terrorized by police and terrified by them. I’d like to say she was the first family member that fell to this fate, but she isn’t.

There are startling figures. Like five first Nations people were shot and killed in police custody last month. In one month! Like the fact that first Nations people make up less than 2% of the population, yet 60% of the young women incarcerated are first nations.

Here’s the backstory.

On June 4, 2020, Chantel Moore was killed by police in so-called Edmunston, New Brunswick. Moore was from Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in BC. She had recently moved to New Brunswick with her daughter, so that they could be closer to Moore’s mother. On the evening of June 4th, her boyfriend in Toronto requested a wellness check, as he was worried that Moore was being harassed. Edmunston Police arrived on scene and shot her five times; they did not use non-lethal force, and they were not wearing body cameras. She was 26. And literally my size. So very small.

According to David Coon, there was no commitment made for an independent inquiry from Premier Higgs, today.

Letter based lobbying efforts are crucial, as it is collecting the support of NB's MLA's to push Higgs' minority government to act. Please send a letter, daily.

Template below:

Letter Writing Campaign - Phase II - Independent Inquiry

As mentioned in the previous summary, we are moving onto a concerted lobbying effort to ask every NB MLA to publicly call on Higgs to hear the calls, from the 15 Chiefs and the Clan Grandmothers across NB, for an independent inquiry.

We will closely track the responses by each MLA, and compile the data in an easily identifiable way. We identify silence as compliance/agreement with Higgs' noncooperation.

-----------------------------------------------

To the Members of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick,

We are calling on you, as a political leader in New Brunswick to add your voice and make a public statement in the legislative assembly, demanding Higgs’ government take the 15 chiefs and Clan grandmothers’ request for independent, Indigenous representation in light of the investigation into the police shootings of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi as well as the not guilty verdict in the hit-and-run death of Brady Francis.

Premier Blaine Higgs and his government have remained silent on the issue and we urge you to persuade the government to take an initial step towards implementing the Calls to Justice from the NIMMIWG (National Inquiry Into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls) final report.

I would like the government of New Brunswick to answer the Call to Justice 5.7 by including Indigenous representation and oversight in the investigations of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi’s death at the hands of the Edmundston Police and the RCMP and to immediately remove the unnamed police officer from the force who shot and killed Chantel Moore in Edmundston on June 4.

These avoidable tragedies have exposed the racial discrimination within our police departments to the attention of New Brunswickers, British Columbians, other Canadians, and the world. The decision by the Edmundston Police Department to bring the police officer back to work refocuses the world’s attention on this issue and action toward meaningful change needs to happen now.

In support of the sentiments expressed by the Chiefs of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, Wolastoqey Nation, Mawiw Council Inc., Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the Wapna’kikewi’skwaq - Women of First Light in their Call to Action for Indigenous representation in the investigations of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi and I urge you to do the same.

Sincerely,

Name
City

Sorry to hear the loss of Chantel's life, affects you more personally than the rest of us Angel *hugs*. North America does need to affectively change police protocol, take action in our justice system towards these individuals abusing their position and recognizing systemic racism is thriving right here in Canada.
I shall answer your call and forward the letter.
May Chantel and Rodney R.I.P, and may they receive the necessary justice they deserve.

I am so sorry for your loss Angel. :( It truly is shameful and sad. Everyone needs to stand up against such acts towards Indigenous People.

How can we talk about reconcilliation, put words on useless pieces of paper that we call legislation declaring UNDRIP, when Politicians in all Provinces continue to turn their backs on this, and on other issues that Indigenous people deal with routinely in their daily lives.

Not only will I send the email, I will make sure to promote this on my LinkedIn account and through my many cultural and business networks.

Everyday that I watch or read the news, I realize how many people in our Country and South of our border are so ignorant, bigotted and have hate in their hearts.

It needs to stop. I hope everyone will send in this letter.

Again please accept my condolences on your and your family's loss.

I can accept the argument that police shouldn’t be dealing with mental health calls, but the reality is, if you pull a knife on a cop you have a very good chance of being shot, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference, political affiliation, age, or whatever you may “identify” as on any particular day of the week

Well LC its a sad story.
People act differently around different people. They act differently around male friends, female friends, family, work buddies, and out in public and they act differently around police. Now add in social miscues like alcohol and drugs and they act very differently. There is a reason the liquors stores stayed open during the Covid-19 shutdown. Its a sad fact that Aboriginal people get arrested usually because they are drunk and disorderly (Drugs are also a big thing on reservations); and they are usually repeat offenders.
For some reason it is being proliferated that police are the problem.
People are the problem otherwise most police wouldn't be called anywhere.
If you are breaking the law the police have to arrest you. If you resist arrest, for what ever reason, you are breaking the law. If you are violent in any way the police have a "Use of Force" policy up to and including "deadly force".
Now if you have social workers go somewhere and the person is being belligerent, they will call the police. Which is why the police are usually called in first to protect the social workers.... Catch 22 .....
I would not like to be an police officer, and watch and see the crap and shit they have to go through on an everyday basis. Its fucken sad..... And then expect to return home alive at the end of the shift.....

Like I said sad...... for both sides.

Done.

The RCMP was created as a racist means of controlling Indigenous people. How can it possibly be reformed?

Thank you for encouraging the forum to support justice
