Oh but yet It's alright for someone to break in a violate someones personal space and property because they've shown their apparent opulent wealth. it's alright for you to call a lady stupid and foolish for dressing provocatively or sexually alluring if something happens to her because some 'human beast" couldn't control his massive manhood.. It's okay for you to call someone an idiot who gets into an altercation at a pub, not because he wanted to but because he was there enjoying his time and some idiot ruined it for him, because she and he didn't follow your prudent advice.

serious get off of it..
+1! Could not have said it better myself.

I also agree with everything wilde has said.

OP seeking to justify his own feelings of jealousy and inadequacy.

no onedeserves to be robbed

You own a huge house.
Your house has huge windows in the living room.
You never close your curtains.
You have a huge TV, and you hang it on the wall and everyone on the street can see you watching it.
You have a $20,000 chandelier. It's bright and beautiful and everyone on the street can see it hanging in your dining room (because your living room and dining room are one space).
You want everyone to know you are wealthy, so for example at Christmas time you put up a huge tree and you decorate it lavishly and put tons of gift boxes around it, and you put this by the window.
You have a late model Mercedes Benz in the drive way.
In the evenings, you still never close your curtains.
You built your house in a neighborhood that's not so great, and your house is ostentatious in size compared to other houses. A couple of streets down, there are people who are usually up to no good.

One day you come home and your place has been ransacked by thiefs and you feel violated. You don't feel safe anymore.

Suppose that was your neighbor a few houses down, and you know almost nothing about him because he keeps to himself.
Do you think he deserved it?
lived in Van for 25+ years, had my car broken into dozens of time, house 3x...I work hard buy my toys, have a nice house, kept it safe with alarms, draw the curtains protect the valuables inside, but a dedicated pro will have skills and tools. After the 2nd time I installed a surveillance system that has motion sensitve cameras in the house, when the system is tripped, it starts taking pics/video...they are all pin hole or well hidden...had nice clear shots of faces after they smashed the back door, spent close to 30 minutes in the house, pics of them going room to room, idiots parked a car in the lane, got pics of that too. Insurance covered everything, what pissed me off most is I had a puppy in a crate, the scum bags did not take the dog, but kicked the crate and it has traumatized the poor beast her whole life... I gave the police a copy of the everything and they caught the two...SPCA will not pursue bcuz the dog was not injured...they won't do time as our legal system lacks...easy to set this up on your own if you want...best place to hide things...kids rooms and bathrooms...they checked the freezers, ransacked all the rooms except my kids and the washrooms...the kicker, the dudes continued to hit homes in the hood, neighbour had the spare keys to his cars stolen...fyi, expensive to replace so hide them well...they were arrested at a construction site less than a block away...they were drywallers, the angriest of all the trades...with long records of B+E's. The lesson to learn is don't brag about what you have, you never know who is listening to you while you sit at the local Starbucks talking about when your leaving on vacation...my break in took place mid day, and I was not on vacation. If you hire a contractor to do work, demand that all staff have a Back Check done...cost $20, price of letting a scum bag in your house... Set up a system like I did, people only regard alarms as a noise and they won't take action to see whats going on...

The OP should have second thoughts about breaking into your house! ;)

How about taking responsibility for the fact that you know there are douche bags who frequent Wreck Beach and try to photograph nude folks? You know that they will be there, yet you head down anyhow, then get all agro that they are there.

Isn't that the same idiotic behavior of "putting yourself at risk" that your neighbor 3 doors down is engaging in? I'm really interested to hear JC's self-serving spin on this...

i agree with the words of choice number 1, 'he should have known better/he was careless' but i disagree with the basic question, 'did he deserve to be robbed?'

these two statements contain a contradiction, so in my moral landscape so i can't vote in the poll

Well for one I had no idea that when I started going there, some people would actually be bold enough to try to photograph others when they are completely surrounded by naked onlookers. Once I encountered such idiots, on subsequent trips I went to the parts of the beach where they were absent. So in response to your charge that I should take the blame for being stupid enough to be in harm's way, I would say that you were a bit too hasty to express your anger towards me.

This is just another version of "blame the victim".
The victim isnt being blamed for being robbed, the victim is being blamed for being irresponsible. It is a distinction that a lot of people have trouble understanding. They are really two seperate things that come together for a common outcome.

I walked into a bar and found you to be loud and obnoxious. I proceeded to punch you in the face, how much responsibility should you take?

A girl wears provocative clothing and have the audacity to hang out at a bar, does she deserves to be raped?
No, she doesn't deserve to be raped but she should expect that the possibility exists, just as would be the case with your obnoxious bar patron. If you are loud and obnoxious, there is a much higher chance that someone is going to take exception to you than if you are not. The loud and obnoxious bar patron is probably going to have lots of experience with being confronted because of it, and if they continue it is because they feel they can handle those sorts of situations (even if it turns out that they can't). It is a risk they willingly take and consequently are partly responsible for.

its a foolish question
no one deserves to be robbed or abused physically or emotionally

my house was broken into about ten years ago, and im certainly not a rich guy, my neighbor last week was broken into
nor is he a rich guy. were both just joe six pac.

maybe you should ask about what is the nature of crime the root of crime.
or maybe victim mentality if you want to blame some one other then the criminial. or the nature of our society which well leads to crime.

Well who can argue with that logic. If you cross the street and get hit by a car, you should take responsibility because that possibility exists. Just wow...

So in that example, you feel that the home owner was being irresponsible for not hiding his wealth? Is that your position?

Crimes like theft happen all the time. Looking for reasons after the fact to blame the victim is silly.
When I was 16 I bought a car for $600. It was broken into in the mall parking lot, nothing was visible in the car, they ended up stealing a $10 pair of shoppers drug mart sunglasses that were in the glovebox. Was this because I was flaunting wealth? But if it was a new car with nice sunglasses in the glovebox it would? People who live in trailer parks get break ins.

I don't think anyone deserves to be robbed. That being said, the police actually robbed me here in Mexico about a year ago. I was really drunk and walking back to the house. I was a few blocks away from it and I guess the cops saw an opportunity and took it. They stole $135 US dollars from my wallet and a picture of my girlfriend at the time. I didn't really care about the money. But they didn't need to take the damn picture. At least they gave me my leather wallet back, empty of course.

Are you asking about 'legitimate' B&E?

It basically sounds like the 'don't dress like a slut' argument... I can tell you it won't end well for you.
