Was observing a couple I know during a barbque we attended. He's in his early 60's and she's mid 50's.

Not only does her face look much more wrinkled than his, but her arms were saggy, the skin on her legs and arms rougher and she generally looked more tired.

I know genetics plays a part, but both are outside a lot, live an active lifestyle and have a "weathered", or outdoorsy look. She just looks more aged.

Most men I know look youger for their age, and most women look older.

I don't think it's definable by their sex.

I know males well into their 60's who look 50 ish and their female partners who have the bodies of mid 30's. Seriously! The males are noticeably more wrinkley while the females ;) seem to disguise it better. They are the extremely well preserved cases.

In support of your post, I do know a couple who now look 20 years different age wise. He has taken reasonable care of himself while she really hasn't been as fortunate even though on a pretty good exercise regimen and diet. Genetics perhaps?

Seeing Christie Brinkley and Elle MacPherson pics this year makes me wonder about how they are so damn awesome looking at their ages (besides the $ invested).

Think I'll go for a hike tomorrow :thumb:

I think genetics and lifestyle play a big part. My brother had a stroke at 42 and it seemed like he aged over night.
He lived a pretty rough life style at the time. I'm 52 now and most folks that don't know me think I'm in my mid 30's, same genes, different life styles. Sun whorshippers tend to look older as they age in my observations. Imho.

Yea genetics and sun damage play a big factor. I am mostly indoors for my job and most everyone thinks I am late twenties even though I am turning 40 soon. I knew being in front of the computer all day away from the sun would be good for something one day! :p

Women's bodies undergo a heck of a lot more changes throughout our lifetimes than mens'. We grow breasts, larger hips, bear children, sometimes more than 1 or 2, which obviously is a different experience for all women. I also think that people have a higher expectation for women overall, so any sign of age and suddenly you are considered old... By mid 50's, most women are done trying to "impress" peoples' shallow view of beauty, especially physical beauty :) The sun may definitely play a role in premature aging, and maybe this lady you know had a lot of weight fluctuations throughout her lifetime. I wonder how many children she brought into the world! If they are active and relatively healthy it probably doesn't matter to her husband, he probably loves her just as much now as when she was younger and fitter... Cheers!

It has to do with women having more attractive qualities when younger. This attraction creates a gravitational pull - according to the theory of relativity, time dilation is a difference in the elapsed time measured by two observers, either due to a velocity difference relative to each other, or by being differently situated relative to a gravitational field.

At least that is one way to explain it that is complete bullshit!

... Older men are seen as distinguished, intelligent & successful ...
Or, we're just seen as old farts.

There's also a tendency these days for the term "Old White Men" to be used as an epithet, attributing all the social ills of the world to our age, race and gender. A younger female friend used that expression, as an epithet, to my face not so long ago. She was embarrassed when I pointed out that she was speaking to just the kind of person she was denigrating.

Hey, I'm a 40's something white guy and I use the term "angry old white man" quite frequently. And I see the whole "old white guy" thing less about all our social ills and more about their caustic dislike of anything outside their little bubble.
As a definitively old white guy, I find it being used in a derogatory way that is ageist, sexist and racist all rolled up into one phrase. Even your description implies dismissively that by being an old person of that race and gender, I am by defiinition unable to see and appreciate the broader world around me. It is not socially acceptable to use a description of any other age group, gender or race routinely in a derogatory way. It should not be acceptable to use that one either.

i think smoking doesn't help. i know a guy in the bar
and i asked him how long he'd been retired. He looked at me
and said 'just how old do you think i am?'. i was stunned to hear he is only 5 years older than me! Heavy drinking and smoking i guess? They skinny wiry look as well.

Not really, it's just men seem to fear aging less than women do for obvious reasons. We are not judged on our beauty. The truth is when it comes to aging it's all DNA. Just like it is with fitness. No amount of cream, plastic surgery, etc can alleviate aging. Males also have more flexibility. If a man loses his hair, he can shave his head and look sharp. Some women prefer bald men now. Society has found a way to turn mens aging into something positive.

For the better part of my life I've been a hard core fitness buff. I've had my "moments of obesity (big time)" but mostly I've been a healthy guy. Healthy people "glow". You can see it in their faces. I believe that's a better option than looking younger than your age.

And as a side note, a good friend of mine is 35. When clean shaven, he looks so young we get asked for ID at the pub. Every single time. It actually frustrates him because he wants to appear more mature. Careful what you wish for I guess, no?
POLL TIME! Do you use botox yes or no!?! LOL! :heh:

there's also alot more chemicals available these days to keep men youthful looking. testosterone replacement therapy is pretty big now. then there's harder stuff to maintain a youthful looking physique such as SARMS, and of course steroids. then there's DNP for rapid weight loss. the stuff will fry off 15-20 pounds of pure fat in 3 weeks. women cannot use any of these things, so to stay physically in shape in youthful looking they have to do it the hard way.

Example: The guy who played Captain Jean Luc Picard on Star Trek. The perfect example of a distinguished older guy. His character was charming, intelligent, cultured...and even today the guy looks freaking GREAT. There isn't really a comparable version in women...
I think Helen Mirren is a pretty good example of a female version of Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard).

I've been watching Twin Peaks: The Return and have found it interesting to see how many of the actors and actresses have aged since the original series first aired. In my opinion, Madchen Amick, who I considered one of the all time beauties, still looks amazing. Peggy Lipton still looks really good. Laura Dern is starting to seriously resemble the way her mother looked back when the two of them starred in Lynch's Wild at Heart. Sheryl Lee still looked pretty good. But Sherilyn Fenn who I crushed on pretty hard back in the early 90's is looking pretty rough. Not terrible... but definitely showing her age...

I don't think they do.

I do think there's more societal pressure for women to appear youthful and have better skin so they get scrutinized more, whereas men are allowed to age "sexily" (think Maddona vs Clooney). In the end, I think the sexiest person is comfortable in the skin they're in. I am more of a natural-look leaning guy (like how much WCA ladies do their make up), but I understand the younger generation likes them to like a Barbie doll nowadays.

For God's sake ladies stay out of the tanning booth!

Nothing looks worse than a beautiful woman with facial colour and texture like a new football.

DNP, like Clenbuterol but more powerful and dangerous. Not for casual users.
