I am finding that I often can't contact SP by phone or they tend not to return my emails. Is this par for the course? I am trying to find a SP that I could call up at the last minute but typically no luck. Any suggetsions?

This is normal for the indie SPs. They can be very difficult to contact and some will only take appointments booked in advance.

If you have trouble by phone consistently, make sure your number is not blocked, that you do leave a message if you can be reached by that number, or that you are not calling from a payphone. Also depends on where you are looking - if CL, and the ad is fresh, no reason why you can't get thru to most advertisers. That is why they placed the ad, because they are available.
If you don't like leaving messages (and your number isn't blocked) just call every 15 minutes or so until you reach her. Indies do not have anyone but themselves to answer the phone: that is why you can get thru to micros, mps, and agencies easily. Don't leave it to the last minute tho, call early to find out her schedule, availability for the time you need.

Emails are better if you are looking for information for later in the day or for another day, but not if you want to email at noon for a 1:30 appt.

It also depends on the popularity of the SP. If she's quite popular, booking can be pretty difficult regardless if it's by email or phone.
This is the same for me, and being a little older, I often get those last-minute calls from my eldest asking me to babysit or help her on outings, especially since my new grandson was born last month. I never answer the phone when I'm with a client. I've seen others complain about SP's who take calls during sessions and I think it's just plain rude. I always silence the phone when I arrive.
I'm the same way about this. By the time I get a chance to return some calls, who knows where the caller could be, or who he might be with? He could be in a business meeting or with his wife. I don't want to make anyone's life awkward or complicated.

I used to take my phone out with me, and I'd be standing in the bank line up. My phone would ring, and I 'd answer and say, Hi, I am standing in the bank line up right now, so could you please call me back in 10 minutes. Ok, but I just want to ask you a quick question. Oh, ok, go ahead please. How much for an hour and are you enhanced?
Sigh, so now the phone stays at home. If I'm uncomfortable answering it, whats the point of bringing it, lol

I find if they're lookin ta score they will answer on the first ring!
But, there are a few out there which this does not apply to so booking online or leaving a message can also work.
