Dirty socks nab killer

TORONTO - A prostitute's dirty socks, held in police storage for 13 years, have led to a rare DNA conviction for the city's cold case sex crimes squad.

An Ontario Superior Court jury found Domenic Marchese guilty of sexual assault, robbery & uttering death threats when he raped a prostitute in January 1991. This is only the 2nd time the cold case unit, working w/Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences, has gained a conviction using DNA evidence from the national crime databank.

GO! FORENSICS! GO!

My favourite DNA arrest was a guy in WA who they suspected had murdered a young girl twenty some years before. He was really sly, carried pop cans, etc. back to his house to burn with the rest of his garbage. They saw that he had gotten a parking ticket a few years ago, so they sent him a fake letter from a lawyer inviting him to join a class action suit against the city regarding parking fines. All he had to do was fill out the consent form and send it back to the 'law firm'. He did it, his licking the envelope gave them the DNA they had been after years. It was a match. Apparently no one was more suprised than the cops that the scam worked with someone so careful.

I guess it was "the slip of the tongue" that did him in.
