Death - Is that it or is there an "After Life?"

One of my closet interests (aside from weird sexy shit), is patching together nuggets from various disciplines to better understand how the mind works, and how we can be conscious and self-aware.
There is tons of neuroscience research that tell us about synapses, brain region functions, etc. Yet the binary-computer brain model falls short for me. There’s gotta be more at play than mbps to achieve consciousness. The multidisciplinary Cognitive Sciences approach hasn’t broken through to the bigger understanding of mind and consciousness yet. At least there’s an attempt, but the 6 disciplines are all kind of mired in their own baggage, and collaboration does not guarantee cognition if they are not asking the right questions, looking under the right rocks, and cross-functionally innovating their research methods and hypothesis testing. I see additive activity, but we need multiplication or better.

One avenue that always perks my interest is when scientists consider the brain as an analogue field generator with binary elements, rather than a binary machine that is completely predictable.
Hmmmm, keeps my spirit alive and hopeful.
Another issue in research is dealing with the gatekeepers. In order to get published one has to follow the status quo. Don't throw rocks, etc.
There is likely a whole other world out there of very interesting but unpublished research...

Even to get funding in the first place, one must bow down to the gatekeepers.

a slight derailment here, but I heard from someone who understands the technology side much better than I do, apparently Elon Musk was using old technology at one of his more recent presentations.

things that make you wonder wtf is really going on in the world these days..

For a secular point of view, consciousness arises from "rates" of things happening. Vast numbers of brain neurons communicate and so consciousness happens. A faster computer with more circuits, a consciousness arises, not about what humans are trying to compute but just raw consciousness. If you will, what would you be conscious of if deprived of your 5 senses and perhaps the sixth sense of extra sensory perception that psychological experiments have to control for. If you can accept the idea of "rates" of things giving rise to consciousness, consider the astronomical rates of electrons orbiting the atom in all the matter in the universe.

Don't drink anything with my good science magazines. Still have the collection in mint condition. Started out paying $1.25 per month, over the years the price rose to $9.95 as I watched the issues grow thiner. Stopped buying after the the format started changing from accredited scientists writing about their own work into second hand information collected in interviews by reporters.

Since you would slander me with inuendo about youthful indiscretions, I would about your avatar, Che Guevara. Picked up arms against his own oath, supervised execution of non-combatans. Killed engaging Bolivian Army.

Conceptualize what robotics experts are doing to make robots walk. They create a feedback loop, which helps the robot learn to walk. Work in the AI field consist of computers learning to talk to humans with advance programs (algorithyms). Although it seems to be the programing, some program have feed back loops which can also rewrite and correct itself.

Its interesting how people tend to think that death is something mystical and we should know more about the afterlife while Life itself is equally strange and mystical. Neither Empirical sciences, algorithms nor Religious texts/beliefs can explain it in a definitive way.

I know as humans we want to feel special and feel significant in our existence (that is what I am probably trying to do while typing this in) but we generally overestimate our capabilities. I don't see any answers coming our way soon but I guess there is no harm in believing in something, to feel more stable and productive, through the journey of life.

Yeah after a few visits with a psychiatrist, when they understand your level of comprehension, they usually open up about their more personal opinions. They even talk about "not rocking the boat" for fear of being ostracized, and often what they preach isn't precisely what they themselves follow. It's really fascinating. Then again some psychologists will try to tell you that you are a lobster!

I personally have nothing good to say about psychiatrists they are just drug pushers IMO. But.. what do I know. I've only had very limited experiences with them so take my comment with a grain of salt.

Psychologists, on the other hand, may..in general.. have a greater understanding because they aren't as distracted by chemical treatments as the main road to therapy, but again.. their understanding of certain lifestyles only goes so far.

When it comes to research... unfortunately that area seems to be just as under control as every other aspect of civvie life

Just one example..

^^ to add to that ...after getting a glimpse at bit of brilliant research that goes against the grain, but was refused publishing for ridiculous reasons...

Wtf is going on. Its already obvious that all other aspects of modern life are under control and have to bow to the popular opinion. Fashion, politics, "heath" etc...

perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised.

This is an interesting topic but to do research we need institutions and to run institutions we need funds and need a system to monitor those institutions. In the end politics comes in and then the disgruntlement.

To elaborate my previous point, Humans are not insignificant, they are maybe not significant for the whole universe but we are significant to each other and to the world we live in. Rather than trying to solve the eternal questions we should focus more on the real world problems and try to make it a little better and we shouldn't take the nihilistic pill either.

I found benefits from both. Psychology I found to be more of a sounding board I use to bounce ideas and thoughts off of in order to test my own sanity and social awareness. Psychiatry taught me the benefits of training the neural pathways in the brain to function a certain way, which the basis for cognitive behavior therapy, among other useful tools not requiring medication. Of course I've met the other type as well who put me on anti-seizure meds for a little while, until I started to go blind anyways lmao.

My health is deteriorating rapidly and as much as I want to believe and be soothed by the hope that there's life after death, I know that's not the case.

Throughout history, humanity has been seeking reassurance and comfort in believing there's more after we die so we don't fear death. The suffering we must endure the dying process surely must have some sort of rewards, right? Most people are desperate to cling to this hope and believe anything which will reinforce their beliefs. It's all about feeling good — comforting lies instead of unpleasant truths.

From a physics perspective. There are claims that some form of consciousness persists after our bodies die and decay into their constituent atoms. They face one huge, insuperable obstacle: the laws of physics underlying everyday life are completely understood, and there's no way within those laws to allow for the information stored in our brains to persist after we die. In other words, the laws of the universe do not allow these particles to operate after our physical demise.

Near-death experiences or post-death experiences where individuals are revived are inconsistent. Upon death, the body and mind do all sorts of unusual things including the inevitable tear running from the eye as death becomes final. We want to believe these are all steps to our journey into the afterlife.

Some people are blessed, some people are cursed, while some are in between. This earth can be your heaven or it can be your hell, but whatever it is to you, I sadly believe you will not have a life after death. Your soul (assuming you believe you have one) dies with you. We have one very short life to live on this less than a friendly planet we call earth. That's why some people choose to be narcissistic and selfish. They suffer from moral disengagement and will do whatever it takes to get ahead.

My best wishes for your health. I think you have given a good balanced summation to this. Near death experiences or post death experiences are inconsistent. Our world is full of people who would spend their whole life thinking about abstract concepts like horoscopes, near death experiences and what the afterlife would be like and spend too little time to work hard and focus on this life.

There is an answer and it comes from Physics

You and I are made of atoms. Namely Carbon, Oxygen & a few other important ones

Each cell has hundreds of millions of moving parts, you are made of a trillion+ cells

If u were to somehow flash freeze every cell in your body and repair whatever damage has occurred to them, while still retaining whatever information it was set to relay, then we could essentially immortalize

immortality is possible, it's just not practical

If immortality is possible it stands against the fundamental assertions and principles of most mainstream religions on earth

From these possibilities and outcomes you can derive a conclusion regarding the likelihood of gods existence
