Once more, brave Rollerboy entered the
Realm of the Fabled Ice Princess, Audrey.
Through winding ways, days and nights
of mountainous passes, freezing plains,
a long unyielding journey, sleepless and hungry
through the Land of Cold and Mist
Until at last descending into the caverns
the Lair of the Ice Princess
A Great Host of Warriors,
Grim Heroes and craven villains,
Mighty Lords and callow vassals alike,
Entombed within Implacable Walls of Ice
some with choked with Rage, roaring in Defiance
others greeting their Moment of Doom
with Laughter,
puzzlement or realization
some Weeping at their Fate
Frozen for all Eternity.
I played with the Lair's thermostat (minus 32 times 5/9ths, no wait...)
Spying the red marker stone, I had left scarcely a year prior,
its smooth shape and runes known so well to me,
I retrieved it from where it lay,
untouched and unnoticed at the foot of the throne.
Rising before me stood the still grandeur of the Ice Princess
in repose, unmoving, unspeakably serene upon her Throne.
"Ice Princess, Twice I have knelt before You,
Enthroned within this Frozen Hall,
and gazed upon your Sublime Glory.
I ask you, grant me a glimpse into the Heart of Fire
which beats beneath your noble breast."
Her Eyes gleamed brightly, a trick of the light.
And it seemed that a wry grin revealed itself
in her unchanging, placid features.
And in half a moment's breadth, I stood upon the open plains,
banished forever from the Realm of the Ice Princess.
My breath turning to fog as it hit the cold air.
Smiling, I laughed at my own misfortune.
"So it is, the Fate of the Unworthy, to draw breath and live another day!"
I held the red stone, as it began to pulse and then beat.
No longer stone, my heart freed from her wintry spell.
"Farewell, Great Queen. May You and your Mighty Host,
slumber peacefully until the Final Days,
when the warmth of your Fire Reborn thaws the World,
and the maiden Spring walks freely once again."
