I have had a profile up on lavalife for about 8 years now (gave up updating bout 3 yrs ago) and the only success was way back when the internet was still growing at a rapid pace. I did happen to meet a dozen women in total and dated two for a short time period. Now.... IF you can weed through the fake profiles made by members ( I have done this personally to fool a friend.. it werked hehe) AND those created by the sites themselves, then yes I guess it is possible. Last month, I sent out 2 messages to different members in the live chat section, something simple like how are you.. can't remember, and the response? "hi just checking out profiles on lavalife.com" ... from BOTH! lol What human would answer that way? I even emailed customer service asking why they have resorted to scam tactics such as "bots" with no reply. Honestly, I have no proof but I have been in several chat rooms in the past and they are extremely obvious. Besides, what would sites possibly have to gain .... not much, just yer fawkin money..... just my take.

I've got profiles on PlentyOfFish.com and AdultFriendFinder.com. I filled out their stupid questionaires but I'm still not sure how they are doing the matches. POF seems to be mostly people who want to hang out and the matches don't even live in my geographic area half the time. You'd think they'd have considered that when designing these sites.
Also, why put up a profile on any of these sites without a picture? Seems like the vast majority don't have a single pic of themselves. Why even bother?

While there are a few exceptions
by and large it's WAY cheaper just to find a nice SP and get your jolies that way - far more private and much less likely to hook you up with a nutbar - Straight girls tend to have agendas you probably don't want to get in the way of. Unless you get your rocks off on your own imagination more than on real people, dating sites are a WOT

What really got me going was the fact of why they felt the need to plug their sales pitch... when you were already logged into the site???? And yes it is so true about weeding out the freaks. Of the women I did meet, 8 of the 12 were were excellent people... and I don't say this because I got laid either.. that only happened with 3. But to get to that point back then took months of weeding and now, esh. I also understand how it is even harder for women. I bet most of the male ads are real but all they want is a girl that will allow him to do pushups over her face LOL Sad but true.
