I'm going down to Cuba (Varadero) in November for a week and am looking for info on things to see and do.

I've heard different things...."stay in your resort as it's the safest there"...."don't go off the beaten path"....

What are some things that you can/cannot do in Varadero? I won't mention my resort but will say that it's one of the more popular ones and has good reviews.

Appreciate any feedback.

thanks,

Check out the World Sex Guide website.....I would suggest the Dominican over Cuba though as you will have no problems/risks with P4P fun....in fact Blackbeards resort specifically caters to that and has a decent roster of Latina hotties to entertain you/fuck you silly.....and for a hell of a lot less than in Canada.

You can certainly leave the resorts. Its pretty safe there. Use your wits and don't go walking around displaying wealth of course. Just use caution when your exchange money, do your own math, and double count it. Even at the airport or resort.

They have tried to cheat me on exchange almost anywhere I have exchanged money there. But have caught them each time, and they always make it right. I also took a cab to a baseball game (which was a unique thing to see there) cabbie wanted to charge me....well basically more then he'd earn in a year for a 10 mile drive.

I called a cop over, who was right there, and the cop got rid of him. I didn't have to pay anything for the ride. So I gave the cop some cash.

Just curious....what currency did you use?

I called a Currency conversion place and they said that the Cuban Peso is a restricted currency and you can only get in Cuba. Should I also take some U.S. dollars? Most of the Carribean countries (I'm assuming) like a U.S. dollar, or should I take Cdn dollars and leave the U.S. dollars at home?

Where did you do your conversions and what did it cost you?

one thing you don't want to do there is drive, don't get into a car accident where one of them gets hurt, happened to someone from Canada and they wouldn't let them leave until it was settled
I think the kid was there for a couple months

and don't have sex with anyone underage or even anyone who looks close to it

there is a guy from AB, who I believe is still sitting in jail there for just being accused of it, I don't think he even had a trial, lol

they're commies you know :)

.......take USD if you want, but they will be of limited use to you in regular shops. Good for "pooning" and the underground economy.

The currency used by foreigners in Cuba is the convertible cuban peso which is approximately at par with the Canadian dollar currently. Only Cubans are allowed to use the cuban peso. You can get your Canadian dollars exchanged at the airport or the resort you are staying at. In all tourist areas and for tour activities from guides you will be quoted in convertible cuban pesos. I never found use US dollars anywhere, tips for tour guides, resort staff can be made in Canadian dollars, but no coins, the banks don't accept them.

I found Cuba very safe, there is large police presence throughout. But like anywhere else, just use common sense when it comes to your safety.

The authorities have cleared up the streets on prostitutes in recent years and they are more difficult to find if you are interested in that. They can be found in hotel bars in downtown Varadero but not in the reputable resorts.

I've rented a car for 10 days in Cuba on two separate occasions, drove all over Havana and drove from Havana to Santa Clara and back and never had a problem. I was pulled over once by a cop in Havana for what I think was an illegal left turn. I just kept repeating "no comprende" and no habla espanol" untill he let me go. As far as girls go, you are right. If they are 18 or older they have government issued identity cards. Always ask to see that. Tourist hotels won't let them into your room though so when I'm in Havanna I rent a room in a private residence.

I used mostly Canadian money for conversion. Did one conversion at the airport. They charge about 20%.
Resort was cheaper, but would only do about $50 a day, and a hassle, filling out a form each time. They would only sell the convertible currency.
I took some Euros too.

it's not so much that they are commies, but that is the spanish way. you don't want to get crossways of the law. for example in mexico, if you get in a car accident, you had best be prepared to settle on the liability with the other driver right on the spot. the police will arrive, and they will wait for a while off to the side looking the other way. if you haven't settled after a reasonable period of time they will take over the scene, impound both vehicles, throw you and the other driver in jail, and let your relatives figure out how to get you out of there. their job is done once you are in jail... oh, and your relatives are also responsible for your food while you're in jail because they don't feed prisoners except for maybe a handful of rice a day

just don't get crossways of the law in a latin american country

oh, and three things that are very much looked down on by the law in any latin american country are public intoxication, public nudity, and gross public disturbances
