Never been to Cuba. While I have compassion for the Cuban people and understand they benefit from tourism, to go there is propping up the Castro regime to my way of thinking which I refuse to do.

The dual currency is why a physician is serving you your meal....they are all after the tourists tips, because it is worth 14 dollars more.
They are all paid the same wether they collect garbage, or perform heart surgery..Cuba is an amazing, very safe country....with a warm hearted , proud people that love Canada, and a deep set hatred of the US.

You have no compassion for the Cuban people if you continue to cling to 60 year old JFK bullshit propaganga and economic boycot hatred that has done NOTHING to change the ‘regime’ in Cuba, and quite rediculously has done everything to sustain and embolden it.

Frankly I don’t think you give a fuk about people you’ve never met, nor have you seen firsthand the harm that this regime boycot rhetoric does. The way to change is through embracing people and getting to know their culture and their land, not sitting in judgement and perpetuating uninformed self-righteous political opinions. Too much harm has been done in this world by one fucked up regime demanding another fucked up regime toe their policy line or else. Regime change through external forces has failed again and again, with human casualities and gross instability in it’s incompetent do-gooder aftermath. It is a catastrophic irony that regime reform is far better than regime change, and that this is an internal process that requires patient engaging with people you may know nothing about or have fundemantal differences of opinion with, or demonstrating real compassion for their situation.

you have your opinion I have mine. I seriously doubt if I took a trip to Cuba it would improve the lives of the down trodden people there to any degree.. I of course never will so I’m a bad person for that I guess.

I've been to Cuba multiple times. As a tourist. In fact I was in Havana the day Fidel died but that is another story. As a tourist if you are staying in one of the resorts, your money is going to the resort and to whatever they pay into the Cuban coffers. I would assume that is part of the Cuban social system but what do any of us really know. On one of the trips I was lucky to be able to hire a local to act as my guide. Took me to places tourists do not normally get to see. A lot of what I would consider poverty. Stores, never on the main drag where the tourists go, but tucked back in the communities, with pretty specific goods on the shelves and not a lot of them. I can say that the $100 a day I gave him was greatly appreciated - he took me to his home, met his family, had dinner with them, smoked cigars, drank the best rum in the universe. I felt honoured.

Does me going to Cuba make a difference to the guy in the street there? I can't answer that. I can say though, I did not see a lot of sadness in the people or at least what I perceive as sadness. I didn't see downtrodden. I saw respect and pride of what they had. The kids all went to school and sure seemed happy. Folks looked well fed and healthy. Their music, to me, is off the charts, outstanding. The food seems to get a bad rap, I don't know, the pork was like nothing I had tasted in how delicious it was, lots of fish, wide variety of fruits and veges - not sure what folks expect. I judge when I am in my own backyard but really try to not judge when I am in a place like Cuba, just learn. They are their own culture and after all the whole place is a humidor 70/70 in the cigar biz, 70F, 70% humidity. Fabulous climate, my skin felt better just hours in! If you haven't been and if you can go, I recommend it.

I went there in January several yrs back.
I didn't do the Varadero package, which seemed to me like I'd be with other tourists and escaping the resort on day trips.
Instead,I stayed in small hotels,and b&b places, called casa(damn, forget the 2nd name,lol)

Spent time in cpl places in Havana, incl. a few nights in Havana Viejo, old Havana, and a few nights in a beach area, whose name escapes me, about
90 minutes from the capitla.

Met very nice ppl wherever I stayed and enjoyed myself.
One word of caution...if you go,don't forget the Immodium...when I was there it was very hard to find.

We always do the air B&B in Cuba and its fantastic, you stay with a Cuban family in their homes. They cook for you and tell you all the great places to visit, grampa has a gorgeous 50's car (they have mostly been converted to diesel). They can drive you anywhere you want and hook you up with other cars to go to more distant areas. Its a great way to experience the country, they will also bargain for you and make sure you get a good deal. They are the nicest most helpful people you will meet anywhere on the planet and the women are gorgeous!

if you've traveled around central america at all... then you know why cubans are better off because of the castro regime. not that its the best situation but at least they are protected from US "interests". at this point they just want to be able to participate in the world economy without US interference.

Cuba is self sufficient they can make what they need as basics, the food is all organic and it’s awesome. When they serve you a chicken leg it’s the size of a turkey leg, they lack spices as they are from offshore but they compensate in other ways. All is always fresh, the trees in the yard provide fresh pineapple, bananas, mangos, papayas and guava, fresh juices. They grow coffee, tobacco for the worlds best cigars and the Rum is fantastic. Can’t wait to go back once this Covid Shit is behind us.

I was expecting to taste more delicious fruits, at the 4.5 star resort selection wasn't good.
The land is very fertile and could produce a lot more. When I was there at late spring it was 90F most days, too hot & humid.
My biggest complaint is the mosquitoes, body covered in bites and the less toxic (natural) bug repellent didn't work.

Didn't experience any diarrhea and don't recommend Immodium, your body needs to get rid of the bacteria/toxins and by using it stays in your system longer.

I've always wanted to go but keep hearing that the food is quite bland. That would deter me.

That’s why we stay with families in their private homes, it’s the only way to go if you want to experience the real Cuba. All the relatives have different gigs going on, went horseback riding in the Vinales Valley with the brother in law, grampa has been rolling cigars for 70 years......etc etc, just fabulous!

Cuba is awesome. I have been going annually for close to 15 years. Food is hit and miss at resorts. Best to stay in a casa and have the owners cook food for you. 50cuc per day and you are living good. Add another 70cuc and you get a gorgeous Cuban girl to stay with you the entire night. 120cuc you are living like a king. 120cuc is approximately US$120. Best to stay in Havana if you want to taste the local cuisine ?? Local are not allowed in the resort areas of Varadero.

Last few trips were in the Holguin area and a couple to Santa Clara. Old Cuba. Oozes with the culture. Incredible royal palms. Favourite resorts in the Cayo Santa Maria. I swear I have never had a better tan nor been more relaxed after a week to 10 days in the country. The good is that for the most part, getting there is straightforward, relatively low cost and for <$200 Cnd a day you can have one heck of a great time. Now the women ... um um. Something about Latin women, their carriage, their skin, those dark eyes .. man I just want to fuck em all!!

I'll travel to Cuba many times more than what I would any other country in the region. They love and respect the tourists there and have a very no bullshit approach to things.
