On April 24th, the E-filing help desk sent E-filers an e-mail indicating the filing deadline had been extended to May 5th.

What they had meant to say was that if you filed the return by April 30th and there were errors or you couldn't get through, you had until May 5th to resubmit. This is a standard e-mail we receive annually.

But the damage had been done, and yesterday, CBC confirmed that the new filing deadline was May 5th.

Now this is posted on CRA's website.

"File by May 5 and incur no penalties or interest

On April 24, the CRA issued a communication to some Canadians that referred to an incorrect filing deadline for 2014 tax returns of May 5, 2015, rather than April 30, 2015.

The CRA takes full responsibility for the error and our first priority is to ensure that no Canadian is negatively affected.

As a result, and at Minister Findlay's request, 2014 tax returns filed by midnight on May 5, 2015, will not incur interest or penalties.

The CRA sincerely regrets and apologizes for any confusion this may have caused."

It's a pretty big screw up in the scheme of things, and I'm sure someone's head will roll over this. But for us taxpayer's, especially the one's who have yet to file, we have another 5 days.

I just love it when the CRA gets the shitty end of the stick. I feel so good to know they fucked up. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of assholes. I say that from experience.
