Interesting too note the Igor wasn't keen on playing in Vancouver, he said that he wanted to play in Montreal. Canucks were one of the 1st teams to get a Russian(Calgary got Sergei Brelin?) but the Russian hockey federation promised that Vancouver would get a top line Russian. If i'm not mistaken Canucks ownership greased the wheels by providing Victor Terasov access to medical services in Vancouver. The rest is history with the 'nucks getting Larionov & Vlad (the hotdog) Krutov.
I don't think it matters about his feud with the management of the team ... he is the best player the team has ever had and he deserves to have his no. retired.
Anyways, no matter, when you look up to the rafters all you will see is a bunch of real Canucks and one quitter! This is just a photo opp for Gillis and the owners; not for Real Canuck Fans. I'll think of #10 as a player with great skill that could have earned a spot up there if he really had a Canuck heart.

Read up on Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsey if you want to know about adversity vs ownership yet still remained Red Wings while trying to organize the NHLPA. Then you might have an idea why I am dead set against the #10 being retired. Those guys were paid jack shit compared to today's players yet they stood eye to eye with the NHL bosses. More so Lindsey but Howe was part of the reason the players were able to organize.

I have read about Howe and especially Lindsay's struggles with nhl owners.
It's ironic that you are criticizing bure for utilizing the power that howe and lindsay craved and helped foster for today's players.
If howe and lindsay could've held out and forced trades they would've done so, but at the time the players had little if any power.

+1 Of the #'s up in the rafters, Bure is the only hall of famer. Take it from a guy that's followed this sad sack team from day one(when the most exciting thing to ever happen during the early 70's was when three streakers ran across the ice live in HNIC) The arrival of Bure was the best thing to ever happen in this city.

Yes, the canucks have been a sad sack team for sure.
Smyl, linden, naslund were all excellent players but they're not hall of famers that's for sure.

Lindsay was stripped of his Captaincy and traded to the last place Hawks in 1960 by Jack Adams. He did not ask for the trade and wanted to retire as a Red Wing even though Adams started false rumours about Lindsay. The Hawks made it happen so he could retire as a Red Wing.

I saw my first Canucks game in 1970 as a kid and loved it as I still do today. Without a doubt Pavel is the best we have ever had here. If we keep retiring jerseys at this rate we will one day start having three digit numbers and hopefully a few Stanley Cup Champs banners too.

Where in attendance was Linden, Ronning, Courtnall, Lumme, Babych, and the 94 gang? Surely a flight to Vancouver is not that expensive in the fall?

There was a personal video speech by Lumme, Babych, Larionov, and Momesso. They had one by Linden but it looked like it was an older one not filmed for his retirement. I could be wrong about this but if anyone was there please correct me. Personally I thought Linden should have showed up, even though it was said he had a business meeting. He should have rearranged it to come to Pavel's retirement. Naslund and Smyl showed, so why not Mr. Canuck himself?

Just maybe and I am going out on a limb here those guys thought Pavel was as much as a douchebag in the locker room as I have voiced in this thread??

The previous comments about paying his contract in CDN vs US dollars simply isn't true. I have never heard that rumour, and it's nonsense. Here is something a bit more recent....he made an appearance at a Langley hockey card show before Saturday's game. I would guess because of his appearance fee, whatever the sum, the promoter was asking $90 for an autograph. Bobby Orr was in town on Wednesday and his autograph was free with his book if you were in the right line up at Chapters.

Yes the contract story has been out there for yrs.

I am not a bure apologist, in fact I am an Orr fan, but your point is unfair to bure.
They are both benefitting from their appearances.
Bure through a fee and Orr through promotion of his book.
I'm sure Orr received a hefty fee for his book by his publisher.
His book deal would include radio, tv and signing appearance fees.

Are you still on Keenan and Messier's email list? :p

Having met Linden, I would find this to be pretty far fetched but as you know, NOBODY knows what goes on inside their dressing room except the players and coaches.

Yeah and every sp I've ever seen just loved being with me & the orgasms weren't faked. Basically if you've reached this level you're an alpha male and an over achiever. So i'd think that they're a lot of pissing contests in any pro sports dressing room.

But the point is - Do these pissing matches ever go outside the dressing room? Plenty of people know somebody who knows somebody else who is the third cousin of one of the guys who handles the sticks after the game. You know what I mean? ;) So much rumour and innuendo in sports and here on Perb too

Who knows? Locally on the island, Greg Adams owns a restaurant and a few of the locals swear up and down that the guy is an asshole. But too me, the only context I've seen him in is interviews that I've seen on tv. I'd imagine that they have their "professional" persona & their private one as well.

Back in the Quinn/Burke era, we had a number of them (Canucks) living out in my area. Some had kids who were doing activities with your own kids and you could always shoot the breeze with them. I noticed some parents tried to get too much in their faces to get the scoop etc. That was a sure way to make them clam up. I just treated them like they were any ordinary father and they seemed to respect that from me. Some were new to the area and would ask me about some local things and I would tell them without trying to get anything in return. I thought that would be inappropriate no matter how familiar you became with them.
