So I got an email from work today reprimanding me for violating my confidentiality agreement. It seems that when I told a fellow co-worker, who was a contactor up for renewal, about my salary and vacation time this was 'read in" to be part of our confidentiality agreement. Now, I do know a little about the law but this seems to be a stretch to me. Does anyone have info on this subject?

It's pretty much standard for non-union employee compensation information to be considered confidential. Many employers have language written into employment offer and acceptance letters expressly forbidding the potential employee from disclosing their salary information.

Thanks for the info However, my situation is somewhat different. I was a contractor, but after a specific period of time became an employee. New contractors were hired and after a period of time were up for renewal as employees. During the course of conversation I told the prospective new employees my salary and vacation time. Our "confidentialy agreement" talks about "confidential documents and information" but nothing about the terms of employment. Frankly, I think they are "reading in" the terms of employment simply because they are pissed off that I told a prospective employee about my terms, which were much more financially lucrative than that initially offered to that employee. Thus, is my conception of what is "confidential" misguided?

I wouldn't think that is covered in a confidentiality agreement unless its specified in the agreement.
