I may have got a virus as my computer crashed and i was left with nothing on my computer so i did a system restore and I was able to retrieve most of my programs and data. However now the computer runs really slow as i have tried microsoft essentials scan and defrag but it still runs slow. When I do a google search it takes a long time to load and the computer starts making a faint humming noise as if something isnt working properly. I am running windows 7 with intel i7 if this helps as I was hoping someone would know what to do before I have to reformat it. Thanks

A fresh install will take care of any virus. If your computer is still slow and especially if it is making an unusual noise, it probably has some hardware issue.

The only 100% sure way to remove a virus is to do a low level format followed by a fresh OS reinstall. I have seen virus-infected files survive a regular fresh install (quick format, not low level format).

Regarding the humming noise, I would see if you can get a hard drive testing software (like HD Tune) and run some tests on it. You may have a bad hard drive and slowness caused by bad sectors.

I would also check your computer for any bad fans. If you have a desktop, open it up and make sure all the fans are still spinning. If you have a laptop and hairy arms, put your forearm by the air vent and make sure you can still feel air coming out of the vents.

It also wouldn't hurt to boot into the BIOS/EFI and make sure Windows can still see all your hardware components properly.

if it's an older desktop, and depending on your smoking/housekeeping habits, you may have a tremendous amount of guck built up around the fans of your power supply. a good cleaning with compressed air is usually in order annually. take it outside to do so, believe me - take it outside

remove the case and vacuum clean everything inside. also vacuum clean the power suply. make sure the are rooms for air to ventilate inside.
