Just wondering, should I turn my computer off when it's not going to used ? The monitor has a screensaver so no big deal, but how about the hd ? I was told that heat was the biggest factor in the degredation of the hardware in your computer. Seems to me that if I leave it on all the time it will accelerate the wear and tear. True or False ?

heat and wear....

best to make it so that the HD will shut down within a given time frame even though your in hibernation. No need to actually power down anymore. Urban legend about power ups cause jolts to the HD.... actually if you go on vacaton ..turn it off. If you expect to use the computer daily, Hibernate.::eek:

Ever open your computer case? God, it's filthy inside. Your computer attracts a lot of dust when it's on. Not only should you turn it off if not using it for more than a hour or two but clean it regularly. The dust that accumulates can cause your system components to burn out because they have to work harder.

Aside from an environment point of view, you should also turn it off because again, the components need time rest and you don't want them to die earlier than they're designed too. Also, there is electrmagnetic waves the PC emits isnt t healthy so you should turn it off. And more thing, Windows needs time to refresh itself so you need to turn off or restart your computer to do so.

Heat could conceivably degrade your computer. However, unless your computer is poorly designed and poorly cooled, it is unlikely to fail because of heat before it is long since obsolete.
My current computer has been on 24/7 running flat out (100% CPU usage on a dual-core) for over a year now. No hardware failures yet! *knocks on wood*
If you are curious as to why I would do that, go here:

However, before I was working on that project, I would just turn it off between uses to save power.

A dirty/dusty computer and case would cause heat build-up. And if you look at the many cheap PC cases out there, they do meet the critieria of poorly built and poorly cooled.

The debate whether to turn/off has been with us for a long time and it will contniue to be for a lot longer, especially since PC's now are running faster and hotter. And let's not get into the OC issues. :D

There was so much to laugh at in the reponse I took this quote from, but turning the computer off to allow Windows time to freshen up??? LMAO

On for me - SOP

There are two schools of thought on this subject. I am a member of the leave it turned on school.
With Computers, the technology is so much better today, I don't think it really makes a difference anymore. It is a matter of preference. The power savings are negligible and electromagnetic waves????
Restart them at least daily to reclaim resources. If you are a power user, then more than once a day.
Turn the computer off once a week, for at least 1 minute, to reset the Hardware.
Open it up once or twice a year and blow the dust out of it with canned air. Walmart even sells it.
As far as hardware wearing out by leaving the computer running. You are absolutely so wrong. The computer will become obsolete long before you wear out the hardware.
Leave it running and you can automate and schedule virus scans, backups, defrag etc.. to run at 3 AM.
These comments assume you are using a halfway decent desktop. You get what you pay for in computing. YMMV

Any electric motor will last longer if left on rather than being stopped and started, assuming the on durations are fairly lengthy. This goes for hard drives and electric fans. But over all the difference in the life of your hard drive will be negligible and you will save much more electricity by turning off you machine. I admit I do leave mine on, that is mostly to avoid boot time when I want to use it but if I go away for a day or more I turn it off.

Interesting comments. I always turn mine off but its a pain in the ass to wait for it to boot up. I'm thinking of switching over to a Mac from my Dell.

I've heard that Mac's are put together much better than PC's. In that case if I make the purchase I just may leave it on.

Did u guys know the wonderful XP feature called HIBERNATE? If you hibernate your PC, start up time is really fast. MAC's are very overpriced. If u have the money though, then why not make the switch?
