keep losing the internet connection ... talked to Telus (about as helpful as
flushing the toilet is to changing the oil in my car!)

anyway, here's what happens:

get a connection and then it gets dropped,
so I check the lights on the wireless router
and they are lit (and flash when i try to reconnect)
also check the lights on the modem and they are 'on'
or flashing, but still no connection.

have to keep trying (just keep clicking on the firefox icon until
it reconnects).

so is this

1. Telus (those rotten bastards)
2. the router
3. the modem
4. the network card in my computer.

thanks!

Switch to Shaw, seriously. Never had a problem with the net, I am using Extreme I. Could very well be faulty hardware, etc. It also could be that they are having packet issues as well. Have you been able to "ping" anything out there?

Also with a wireless router try not to put it where there are any antennas as that can sometimes disturb it.

Did they tell you if they are having any issues with the DNS servers? sheesh I wish I could help, and I hope it gets better for you.

sorry, should have been more clear in my post: the laptop is hardwired to the router ... i NEVER use the wireless feature and have that shut-off on the laptop.

:)

Eliminate as many of the variables as possible.

I suggest bypassing the wireless router and plugging right into
the modem (if you have all the security updates). That way
you can figure out if it's the wireless or not.

Good idea, eliminate them one by one, hopefully something will show up

The wan light on modem has to be on and no blinking, if not start there. call telus and tell them. You also can go to start ,run Type command then type ip config then type ping x [ your isp ] and see what comes back. if packets sent and return is 100% its not telus or modem

I recently had a problem with telus and when the tech came out he swapped out the modem. However, despite that they still had to fix the configuration on their end.

In other words, everything can look normal on your end and it still won't work.

Another possible problem could arise if you changed the router as telus uses the mac address to identify you. If that changes they might shut down the connection on you. However, in that case you'd probably see some indication on the modem. That problem is fairly easy to fix however if all you did was swap out a router as you can simply clone the address of the previous equipment. I see gravitas already mentioned another solution to this problem.

My experience with telus was that their customer support was not that great (ie wait 1/2 hour after going through 15 confusing voice menus before getting someone) but the tech who came out was very helpful and got everything going pretty quickly.

I'm using shaw at home and I have had long term outages before but generally the service has been pretty reliable over the last year or so.

Thanks everyone

lots of great ideas and i will do some plug and play tomorrow and
try to locate the problem ...

the fact that it is 'intermitant' seems to lead to the problem being
over at Telus and if i can nab a tech again i will mention the router
in the works.

you guys/gals are great!

Probably #4, but I would also check on line quality and if they installed a splitter, and then #3.

It's your network card.
Try swapping with another computer to confirm.
They pull out and install really easy.
Unplug the computer first tho.

First reboot your router.

If that doesn't work, reboot your modem.

If your still having trouble, reboot your computer.

I have telus, it sucks, but can't get cable. Telus guys say always start with router.

Also look for firmware updates to router and telus modem. Have recently updated both from Manufactors websites and eliminated most connection problems.

well, it looks like the problem was the wireless router ... took it out of the
'loop' and the whole system seems to be working as it should.

will have to contact Telus and see if the router was 'registered' or whatever
was required to get it to work.

thanks again.
