Last night, something got onto my computer that keeps setting my IE home page to
res://fbdwt.dll/index.html#96676

I downloaded a freeware version of Ad-aware, but it's not doing anything.
Doing a Google doesn't seem to help either.

Help?

Hey Wolfy....

Sounds like your browser got hijacked. Funniest thing is that yesterday I posted a news article on it. Check this out and hopefully it will help. DB`s reply looks helpful in removing/fixing your browser...give it a try.

Wolverine - run Pest Patrol (Corporate) if you can get it. The free version only shows you the pest, but won't allow you to delete it / them... I gave Massage Girl a copy of it, and she said it helped fix her problem.

Try Spybot

By the name, it might be some variant of CoolWebSearch.

Try Spybot
It has an overlapping set of stuff (with AdAware) that it detects.

This sort of thing is usually done via java. Turn off java and reset your home page and restart IE.

If that fails get a one of the packages mentioned above.

Thanks folks.

Usually I like to spend my Friday evenings out drinking and fornicating, but instead, I've been trying out every anti-spyware and anti-adware program in all of creation. What seems to be working the best right now is SpyWareBlaster. For starters, it can freeze my home page so that it's not overwritten. Others I've been trying include Hijack This and Spybot. And I just tried goesks suggestion...thanks, bud.

This patch(s) should be on your system already but.. here is

MS03-040 Cumulative Patch for IE
Update for Windows Media Player URL Script Command Behavior (MS Knowlege Base 828026)

Both patch can be download via your windows update.
MBSA (Ms Baseline Security Analyzer V1/2) is also good choice to check any vulnerabilities on your system.

Have fun people!

How do you get rid of these god awful toolbars??
They've downloaded themselves onto my computer.. I've had them for a while.. and they won't go away.

I also have a highjacked browser. It won't even let me access certain sites.. everything is controlled by the highjacker, somehow.. it's kinda freaky.. heh

If anyone knows how to get rid of these toolbars and stuff, please let me know.. it's getting soo frustrating.

Hey BB: Like the post reads - try the "recommended" spyware removal software. I know for a fact that "hotbar" is one toolbar that is spyware, yet lots of people use it.... try reading the licencing agreement for hotbar - it states that they reserve the right to mine data from you once you installed their toolbar....

I say - zap all spyware..... lop is a particularly nasty one - I use corporate version of pest patrol. Sent a copy to massagegirl.... maybe you can pm her of a copy.....

Use a program like Spybot Search & Destory or Ad-Aware. If those don't get rid of the problem, then do a search on google for how to remove it "(toolbar name) remove" as an example. Tons of sites give step by step lists to removing just about any spyware out there.

I took jim's advice and installed Mozilla. Works like a charm, but still have to get used to the Netscape style user interface. My SpyWareBlaster is already configured to handle Mozilla.

Can anyone recommend a good freeware firewall? I thought about getting the one offered by Telus since they're my ISP, but they package theirs with their Antivirus program and I already subscribe to Norton Anti-Virus.

lol Privan -- I already did all of that, *and* manually searched through my registry. Nothing.
But then what did the smart girl do? She downloaded an *UPDATED* version of ad-aware, and blasted months of toolbars and browser highjack crap, within seconds!
I'm smrt :D

Oh and J1tanamera -- it wasn't hotbar. It was mysearchbar and bowsmeowsite (i have no idea why it's called that, LOL) Anyway, I never did actually install the toolbars myself.

Anyway, they're gone now.. so, all is good :)
