Dear Fudd,

You now have the opportunity to learn how to succeed through other people's efforts. The Dali Lama, which features prominantly in your postings, might say you have two paths. One in which you make decisions for other people, push them, and take the credit and some limited responsibility for the outcome. The other path has you build them up, help them to succeed, show off how good your team is, and only hope that someone of influence recognizes your wisdom in developing an environment where your staff can flourish.

I know this. I started out as the first. When I changed to the second, my career quadrupled. So for what it is worth, consider being a farmer and not a military captain.

Sincerely,

PTCS.

Does this mean you will go to church to give a prayer of thanks.

Wow....god advice on Perb!

Employees who feel valued, acknowledged, respected and challenged set their own bar higher. They take pride in working harder and more efficiently, and the positive outcome is synergistic.

Even if you don't get outside recognition for raising your team to new heights, you will at the very least be part of a team which is not only more productive,
but much happier. Clients and potential new employees and employers are all drawn to that sort of environment.

Fudd: both Poeticus and Lady Companion are bang-on.

I have always advised my employees that I promoted to manager: that the transition from worker to manager requires you to find other ways to measure your accomplishments/self worth in your job. As a manager your measure becomes what your team accomplishes, rather than what you personally have done, whether it is: files closed; services delivered; projects or products completed & delivered, depending on what your team & yourself do.

I could go on ad nauseum about important things like: setting priorities, making decisions, showing how good decisions are made, helping your team and team members grow, handing out discipline when warranted, acknowledging successes, keeping your team focused, hiring good people, keeping the company BS away from the team, helping achieve productivity, and many others. It all boils down to very good communication both to your team and across the broader organization.

I've always found communication to be "tricky", the same message delivered to 2 different people can be received so differently. To some good communication comes so naturally, to me it was a constant learning effort and work in itself. Good luck with it.

It will be, until you get used to all the routines, shortcuts, etc.

Every new job is like that.

Delegation is the key.

Just make sure the assignee understands the deadline, and since you may have to "tidy" it up afterward don't let them spend too long on the assignment. I always liked to frame an assignment in terms of "if you spend more than x minutes on this - you're getting too detailed".

One guy took off on a long weekend on Thursday afternoon. And the other guy helping me today took off at lunch. They were supposed to be helping with the month end paper work.

the sooner you learn how to do this successfully, the sooner you can get down to the Cecil for power lunches. Bring the X's sister while your at it too ;) She will be impressed by your new power position.
Starting 3 weeks ago lil sis stopped returning my calls and messages. And I have no ideal why.

This has been a really shitty few weeks for me.

Maybe getting this promotion was not a good thing.:(

I had to go into work this morning. This is the first time I have ever had to do paper work during Xmas holidays.

Hey how long is Silky banned for?

Think of it this way, if your new job keeps you busy then maybe you won't have time to hit any more police officers, chain yourself to anything, discriminate against any innocent owners of legally registered firearms or have sex with any more 'little sisters' and you'll be able to stay out of trouble.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one...

now you can see why it isn't always worth being the manager. Take all the hours you are spending and divide it into the new salary and just see what you are working for /hour, and you thought you got a raise??

What did you think being a manager would be like?

In *most* companies, management not only means being in charge, but also working extra hours, usually without overtime pay. Extra responsibility has price associated with it.

your mom says hi.
take any of the rights you have left in this province as an employee and once you become a manager, forget any of the even exist because you now have none.
