Any recommendations on comics? I just finished the Scott Pilgrim books and I am looking for something new.

Read the "Watchmen" and was thinking of picking up Mark Millar's "Wanted"

Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley is terrific by the way though incredibly short... I'm not sure about the upcoming movie though, Edgar Wright should do a good job (especially with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz under his belt) but Michael Cera is awfully George Michael Bluth to me.

Depends what you're looking for. Do you want super-hero or non-superhero?

These are some of the best regarded comics of recent years.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is probably the best Batman story ever and is extremely subversive. If you liked Watchmen you should like this one.

Sin City (Any)

The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman (Graphic horror and fantasy).

100 Bullets

If you want sick, twisted, and REALLY subversive Marshal Law.

No preference here, but I tend to lean toward non-traditional superhero types. I just want a good read...

All the above I mentioned are good reads.
The only problem is some should really be read chronologically especially 100 Bullets.

Other than Dark Knight none of these are traditional Superhero.

In the case of Sandman you should read the first arc (Preludes and Nocturnes) that will introduce you to the world and then you can jump around- just leave The Kindly Ones and The Wake till last. This one touches the DC Superhero Universe in the first arc and pulls in characters from the DC Horror books but if you didn't know that going in you probably wouldn't notice. after that it exists in it's own universe.

I've re-read this many times.

Sin City can be read in any order.

I forgot- Y the Last Man- also needs to be read in order but a great read.

If I was to put these in order of preference:

Dark Knight Returns (AVOID Dark Knight Strikes again)
Sandman
Y The Last Man
Sin City
100 Bullets.

Should add Tomb of Dracula (can be gotten in $20 500 page Black and White Essential Volumes.

Doom Patrol (Grant Morrison issues) http://www.dccomics.com/vertigo/graphic_novels/?gn=2355

Usagi Yojimbo http://www.usagiyojimbo.com/
Usagi Yojimbo is set in the beginning of Edo period Feudal Japan (early 17th century) with anthropomorphic animals replacing humans, and features a ronin rabbit, Miyamoto Usagi, who wanders the land as a shugyosha (student warrior on a pilgramage) occasionally selling his services as a yojimbo (bodyguard). Hence the title "Usagi Yojimbo". The character of Usagi has been inspired by the famous Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi while the tone and inspirations of the stories are heavily influenced by Groo the Wanderer, Lone Wolf and Cub and the films of the acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa.

Oishinbo. It's a manga about Japanese food. A group of journalists at a magazine have been chosen to create the "Ultimate Menu" to celebrate Japanese culture and some 100 year anniversaty. It sounds boring, I know, but it's actually one of the most interesting books I've read. It's collected based on specific foods, I've read the Sake and Sushi volumes and really enjoyed them. They do make you starving hungry though since you want to sample all the food stuffs. :p

Otherwise, buy EC Archives SHOCK SUSPENSE STORIES Vol 2. It's pricey at about $35 on Amazon, but you wont find a better, more thought provoking read anywhere. Don't be scared that it features books published in 1953 either, these stories about racial intolerance and drug addcition (just to name a few) hold up very well, and the art is too die for.

A comic geek buddy of mine got me hooked on "Fables".

The series is about fairytale and nursery rhyme characters who escaped from their lands being overrun by a powerful adversary and are living in a secret society in New York. Definitely not for kids.

Without a doubt, you need to pick up:

"The Preacher"

I happen to think Garth Ennis is one of the best writers out there, so I'll also recommend:
"The Boys"

Another Garth title that is quite a fun read about an angry working girl with super powers...an SP with SP:
"The Pro"

Have fun.

Can't believe I forgot that one.

Yes it's excellent- this isn't your children's Snow White, Pinnochio, etc.

Preacher too.

So many good reads.

I like how they made Prince Charming the guy who married and divorced Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella in successive order, and that Bigby Wolf is the same evil wolf from both 3 Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood. We see Little Boy Blue, Red Hiding Hood and Goldilocks as adults - and Pinnochio, who is pissed off for not being able to reach puberty and have sex. Spotting the who's who of popular characters is the fun part of reading this series. I also read that a TV show is in the works.

Supreme is amazing, just go read it. It's by allan Moore and I think his best work. The art is great and the story lines are really entertaining and anyone who likes comic books will love it. It's hard to break down and explain but it's his take on a iconic big super hero guy and it is funny and the story line is so well done.

Invincible is also really good, has good plot twists. Solid on going story and very entertaining and fresh.

Y the last man is a great read, it's about one day all the men die except for one and it has a great story arc. It also ends which so few American comics do, and I mean end because the story is done and not because sales died.

Knights of the old republic is also very good, not just a great star wars comic but also a great fucking comic period. Clone wars also very good.

The ultimates is a revisioning of the avengers and it's one of the best comics marvel is putting out. It's done in arcs and has no retarded episode of the week issues.

Runaways is great, very good and shows what American comics can do.

One piece is a manga but it is the fucking best. I shit you not, you will laugh hard, cheer and even cry.
Just read one piece go to www.onemanga.com
You can read it all there. One new chapter every week, writen by the same guy and has been going on over 10 years? It's only half way done according to the author and it is astoundingly good, one of the greatest pieces of writing ever. I know it's a huge task to get into something like this since it's so far along, but trust me you will be hooked and will have the joy of catching up. Then be like everyone else waiting weekly for new chapters.

Also claymore is amazing along with historys strongest kenichi.

The problem with American comics is it's all episode of the week crap, it's todays villian is... Beat villian and problem solved but this issue has no real importance.
It's the reason that Japanese comics have been slaughtering American comics since the 80s.

One piece is one whole story that comes out once a week and is up to chapter 500 something and it has arcs but it's all one giant great story writen by one guy.
Naruto is also good if you only read the manga and not watch the anime.

American comics are full of so much shit,
Spider-man has to be doing some of the dumbest story line stuff. The whole civil war spider-man reveals who he is to the world was okay, then they kill his aunt who for some reason used to be really old and frail but seems to not be anymore. Then they decide to take it all back, so spider man makes a deal with some devil who resets the world or some bull shit. Really fucking retarded. I thought when they decided that gwen stacy had twins with Norman osborn that were now adults that it could not get stupider than that, but it does.

X men were pretty shitty for a while when they had the whole let's not dress like super Heros fucking idea which was bull shit. They finally realized how fucking stupid they had gotten and are finally undoing some of the damage they did.

Wolverine origins was good, though again with this gay ass let's introduce a son for him bull shit... Can't remmember the name of it but the comics with x 23 (wolverines female clone) are pretty decent, though it gets stupid in the one where she is teaming up with the girl who stops time and some pimp is chasen them around, yea it's pretty dumb.

Superman is shit, there are some okay one shots like the red son or the one sperminator mentioned but the monthly comics are fucking stupid. I hate fucking superman comics some of the dumbest shit in comics to ever happen takes place in superman. My god you would have to be an idiot to like superman comics.

JLA is okay they do several issue arcs which at least give good storys.

Wonder womans pretty decent even though I don't care for the character. Eyes of the gorgon was okay.

Batman was interesting for a while but has gotten so fucking contrived and stupid right now it makes me want to hit whoever is fucking writen it. Like the lady doc killing the girl robin then batgirl going evil or batman adopting robin as his own son, then batman having a son with that one chick and hes named damien and goes around killing everyone. God what was that pitch meeting like?
Guy A :I know let's give batman a son he doesn't know about who's a totally evil killer
Guy B: great idea but what should he be named?
Guy C: how about damien
Guy A: my god that's fucking genius! Now what should we name batmans new boat?
Guy C: the batboat!
Guy A: great work again C! My god your so good you should write for superman, maybe come up with a new color of kriptonite that will have some wacky new effect on superman!

Just fucking fucking stupid shit.

Green arrow has been pretty good, longer story arcs but the girl who's speedy first saying her dad raped her as a kid then she was a crack addicted hooker and now she has HIV is just fucking stupid.

Green lantern is kind of okay, some good storys some not. The Hal Jordan stuff is pretty good.

Catwoman was pretty good but then it got infected with the retarded shit that's going on with batman like when she gives away her baby, just fucking stupid and a perfect example of what's wrong with American comics.
They need to write storys then end it, instead they have no character development and any that is done gets reset every few months.

Manga is leaps and bounds ahead of American comics simply because they know there is a start to a story and an end.
Superman, spider-man and batman, there is no end, batman has been 28 for 60 years and there is no development and any that might happen gets reset so they can sell next months issue.

I have not bought a comic book since I was in 6th grade?
I stoped reading american comics then and when I got to university began reading japanese manga online.
Though now since I work out of the city and take a lot of comics from the library with me to read in my down time.
I end up reading a lot of shit comics this way simply because I have nothing else to do.

That being said go read one piece right now, www.onemanga.com/one_piece
Read from chapter one, trust me you will love it, even if you feel like it's not for you, just give it a try, read the first 10 chapters or so and you will devour the other 500 as fast as you can.

Crossed by Garth Ennis. Not for the screamish. I only picked it up with #3+4.
