I don't desire to turn PERB into a telethon but I have seen that several SPs volunteer somewhere, or support various charitable foundations.
I got to thinkin' and decided I would forego an upcoming session and donate the money to a worthy charity instead.
After some research I chose "Doctors without Borders"
There are over 70 Canadians, including many MDs, that are volunteering in desperate countries (Sudan, etc) to help some of those that can not help themselves.
Check out www.msf.ca

I feel really good about it. It's my Christmas gift to myself.

Think about it. Maybe you will feel better too. Believe me, $250 can be better spent.

Anyone with a degree, or some sort of trade can go overseas for a period of 1-2 years to volunteer with a worthy organization

Airfare is paid(return), board is paid(food included), a minor salary(by this I mean enough to buy odds and ends), and also compensation package on return home

Just if anyone was interested in such work ;)
Tell us more. What are the agencies and do they have websites?

I doubt many would be interested in volunteering at this time as an aid worker in Iraq. Now that the U.S. dollar has been taking such a dive in the last year perhaps there's opportunities in Hawaii - after all, it qualifies as an "overseas" location from our perspective in Canada. :) :)

What a great gift and a wonderful idea. I have seen their shows on t.v. and some of the working conditions and the people that they aid are pretty sad. That kind of work in my opinion takes an amazing amount of dedication and compassion. I applaud your decision to contribute to them. I stick closer to home with my charitable stuff and donate new clothes, food, gift certificates, and toys to kids who might not see a Christmas. It is a great way for my kids to truely understand the gift of giving.

A great idea.
I like the Sally Ann and St James Social Service.
Main thing is to give to some organization that helps others.
