The move has been called a grave violation of freedom of expression Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has said he will not renew the licence for the country's second largest TV channel which he says expires in March 2007. In an address to troops, Mr Chavez said he would not tolerate media outlets working towards a coup against him. Radio Caracas Television, which is aligned with the opposition, supported a strike against Mr Chavez in 2003. But the TV's head said there must be some mistake as its licence was not up for renewal in the near future. Marcel Granier also vowed to fight against the president's plans in Venezuela's courts and on the international stage. The BBC's Greg Morsbach in Caracas says Mr Chavez has repeatedly threatened to take the TV off the air but has never given a date. There will be no new operating licence for this coupist TV channel - the measure has been drafted so go turn off the equipment Hugo Chavez The move could help silence some of his critics in the media who have been a thorn in his side for several years, he says. Mr Chavez, who was returned to power by a wide margin on 3 December, said Mr Granier was mistaken in believing "that concession is eternal". "It runs out in March. So it's better that you go and prepare your suitcase and look around for what you're going to do in March," he said during a televised speech to soldiers at a military academy in Caracas. "There will be no new operating licence for this coupist TV channel called RCTV. The operating licence is over... So go and turn off the equipment," Mr Chavez said. 'Violation of freedom'

He plans to take the country socialist / communist.. I wonder how long Uncle Sam will stand for that before Chavez commits suicide by stabbing himself in the back 12 times and throwing himself off a bridge?
A pro-Chavez member of parliament, Carlos Escarra, told the BBC he has been appointed personally by Mr Chavez to prepare sweeping reforms of the nation's constitution. Mr Escarra, who is now part of a presidential commission on constitutional reform, said: "One of the proposals is to change the name of our country from Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Socialist and Bolivarian Republic".

Cut the guy some slack. He simply wants to rule with an iron fist. With all of the oil money that he's pumping back into the country and it's people, they'd gladly stab themselves in the back 12 times and throw themselves off a bridge in his place.

On the upside Venezuelans won't be subjected to Rosie O'd and the rest of the cattle, oh I mean hosts, of The View.

I was born and grew up in Venezuela. Let me tell you a little something about the country, it's society, and Chavez:

Chavez should be building social housing and creating jobs for the 47% of the population that is poor, living in slums... where every time it rains you pray your "house" doesn't go down the hill with the water.

He should be building schools and reforming the country so they all know that stealing is not a part of your daily life. All the non-poor people in Venezuela did was steal to get by, and then get rich, and then flee to Florida when they were done. I don't blame them as much as I blame Venezuelan society for planting the idea that cheating the system is... almost expected of you... that if you don't, then you're stupid.

Instead Chavez gives money away to other Latin American countries, in search of support for only few know what... pointing Bush as the enemy number one, the Devil himself.

He should fix his house before he starts pointing out other people's problems, or trying to join a group of nations, or starting fights with others.

Next thing he's gonna do is invade English Guyana and claim it as Venezuela's again like it used to be in the 1800s. WTF would the point of that be? eh?

Well the point is definitely a big one... he would finally be able to say Eddie Grant is Venezuela's pride and joy rock star. "We're gonna rock down to electric avenue.... and then we'll take it higher"

The sad part about what he's doing is transforming the country into a Marxist dictatorship. If you even think about opposing him you will be considered a criminal. People are losing their freedom of speech and will have a tough fight getting it back. To think he called George Bush the Devil!!?

You get the government you deserve. The Germans voted in the Nazis. Venezuela voted itself a dictator with ambitions of being a global cartoon character.

They don't deserve freedom, and neither do the liberal dipshits who've defended Chavez all these years. Champion of the People. Suck my balls, commies.

And Americans elected George W. Bush. Yep, you're absolutely right about people getting the government they deserve. Not that they had much choice, mind you. A country that fields Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber as the candidates for president does indeed deserve to be governed by a halfwit, which is exactly how it turned out.

Yes, just as we in the lounge are treated to the halfwitted remarks and retarded arguments that we richly deserve.
