Hey, I'm going to go get a cell phone today. Any suggestions for me anyone??
I would like a plan. Which plan? I dunno! I don't think I will be using it more at any time of the day.. Maybe somewhere where its unlimited for 3 months then i can see what kinda package i can use.
I'm also being thrifty about it (as with everything) so I was thinking medium price range, too cheap is bad, but i don't need anything super fancy (like with a camera on it or anything)

hey

You going to use the phone for business ?? If so get the phone under somebody elses name it will protect your id better. A certain SP has a stalker following her and the only thing i can think of is the stalker must have traced the cell number to real id.

Pay as you go Lisa - I think that makes most sense

Pay as you go may be the most logical for you. All unlimited plans include expensive phones and/or lock ins for many months.

Pay as you go may be more per minute but as long as it is just for business and you can resist the urge to chat to friends with it, then pay as you go makes the most sense. AND, if you are very cheeky, you can write it off with CCRA next April!!

Telus pay as you go!

For $30/mth you can get free evenings (after 6:00) and weekends. The rest of the time it is .29/minute.

Has voice mail and text messaging and I believe is the best way to go. The number one reason is that you can register it as Jane Doe living at 1234 Main Street!

Bell Mobility and FIDO both have excellent plans, and cell phones. Go to one of their booths at a mall. They usually have mail in re-bate promotions, so in the end the phone itself is free. But they do require 1 to 2 year contracts. If you don't plan on using it much I agree with Howie go with pay as you go. Happy shopping!!

Lisa,

Decide on which plan first. You can probably look at all the websites (Fido, Telus, Bell, Rogers) to compare ALL the montly plans or pre-pay packages. There's enough choices to make your head spin (they are all very similar). When your headache goes away, you can decide on the carrier and the plan. Almost all the phones come with some extra capabilities beside just being a phone. You can decide what kind of phone fits your budget and features from that carrier. You can also read cell phone reviews if you want idea about performance.

Prepay is good choice because it usually has most of your extra features (call display, forward, voice mail, etc) included. You can start with pre-pay to see how much time you are using and then switch up to the lowest monthly plan.

Monthly plans are good if you use a lot of minutes. Also remember, that the most monthly plans add charges for call display, forward, voice mail. Avoid plans that have contracts, if you are unsure about cells.

AFAIK, Fido is the only carrier that charges by the second (on monthly plan), so you don't get charged 1 min. for a 5 sec. call. IMO, too many horror stories with Rogers about service. Bell is quite new.

HTH.

I got a free basic phone with a 3 month contract from fido, no rebate. The plan I picked was 150 daytime min and 1,000 evening /weekend min for $46 inclusive. This is the first month I've gone over that limit in a year, but I've been using it to gab with friends as I cancelled my $30 telus landline. I doubt my extra min charges will come to that (10-20cents/min extra). I think they did a quick credit check, however pay-as-you-go doesn't require one.

I believe the signal is not as strong as Telus who have the most towers.

my 2 cents. If you have lousy/no credit, this may put a kink in the plan and limit you to pay as you go only. Rogers locks you into a yearly term with heavy fees to cancel out before it is up. As far as phones go if your like me, the cheapest one will do. I mean all I want the bloody thing to do is make calls and get calls. Games, internet, camera.....what ever!

I have very good credit, so I think i will look into that 3 month plan. I don't like the idea of a whole year, who knows what will happen in a year.
Thanks for all of your input!
I'll head over to metrotown this afternoon :)

You might want to check out Citifone for low cost no-contract services. Not so good for out of town but just for the city is OK. They have a website.

Telus has wider range throughout BC. If you chose Telus you are able to receive call even way out in the interior !

Somewhere Out There
I use Fido and regret it as it rarely works outside the Vancouver area ie in the Okanagan where I am going now.

Also a warning - the cheaper phones work only with the one service provider - ie. you can't switch from Rogers to Fido using the same phone. To do that you have to get a new phone or a more expensive one that can work on all systems.

Possible hijacking

I'm sorry, but after reading this thread there is only one question filling my mind that demands to be answered:

Did Sarah/BabyBelle and Lisa actually meet one another, and if so what happened?

Don't mind me but I'm now going to bed with fantasies of two beautiful ladies dancing (and doing other things) in my head.... ;)

Yes we met hehe she helped me pick out my phone yesterday. For those of you who are wondering how she is, shes feeling better and is starting to take appts here and there.
What happened is that we went shopping together he he. It was funny to walk around the mall and look at some people and think "whoa, they dress like whores. Little do they know, we ARE whores'
heheheh
I did forget my brand new cell at Orange Julius though.. Someone returned it to Bell. I am one lucky girl when it comes to that stuff. I've forgotten my wallet filled with cash on the bus, not 1 not 2 but 3 times!
and gotten it all back every time. Now its attached to a string ha ha!
