Can anyone provide me with info on getting a cell phone recoded. For example, if I have a cell phone that was programmed for use only with Phone Company X, where can I go to have the phone recoded so it could be used with Phone Company Y.
Many months ago, I read on this board, that there was a place in Richmond. Search didn't find anything.
Any info would be appreciated.

Only Rogers and Fido phones can be used on each other's networks. To find out how to unlock your phone, google "unlock *brand name* phone " for more info. ie. unlock motorola phone

hope that helps

I hope this does not put you to sleep…..

First there are two major divisions in cell phones…

CDMA and GSM…

Most North American phones are CDMA….most European phones are GSM…

A phone from one type will not work on the other….

Now lets drop to CDMA which is Bell Canada…TELUS…I am not sure on Rogers but I think it is CDMA as well.

Within CDMA phones there are frequencies or bands that a phone is capable of using….800 MHz and 1200 MHz are the frequencies….There are some phone that are tri-band phones but it is not likely you have one. So you need to figure out what carriers are capable of supporting your phone.. The best way to figure this out is who are the roaming partners.. If you can roam onto a carrier with your phone then your phone works on the carrier’s network….

In the US carriers will provide you a new phone at no cost if you sign up for a 1 or 2 year contract. I assume Canadian carriers are the same…

You need to get the master lock code of the cell phone. It is usually done by brand name. You should be entitled to get it, but if you go to Bell or Telus World stores, they will tell you they can't give it out.
Anyway...good luck with it.
If you provide the model of phone you have, I may just be able to find a master lock code for you. ;)

Bell and Telus are CDMA
Rogers and Microcell (Fido) are GSM.

You must be from the States. We are 800MHz analog, 800MHz Digital and 1900GHz Digital. (CDMA)

If you want to take advantage of some of the newer features that providers offer, you will likely need to get a new phone.
With 1xRTT technology and the benefits it adds to network efficiency and load, it is quite possible that another provider will not activate your phone, unless it is, "1x Ready."
