I need a spare "back-up" cell phone. Any suggestions on which ones are good value and you don't have to give out your real name, ID, etc?

I'm pretty sure you have to give out your real name and stuff. You will probably end up signing some papers.

Yup, 7eleven is the way to go (I have two lol) - you don't need to fill out any papers or provide any info whatsoever.

If you buy $100 of air time, they offer $60 off for the phone. The have a couple of phones that ARE $60, so that means it's free, or you can pay the difference if you choose one of the other options (if any, depends on the store). Plus they give you 20minutes airtime with the phone.

It's really good because unlike all the other pay-as-you-go, who's prepaid time expire after 30 days (or sometimes 60 days if you buy $50+), 7eleven's is good for an entire year. Plus you get voicemail, call waiting and call display included. It's worth it if you plan to have a number while you're here. Incoming text messages are $0.05 & outgoing are $0.05 (Canada) $0.10 (USA) or $0.25 (International) -- better than what I get with my Fido prepaid. I think you can get a number change (if you wanted a Calgary phone # for example) for about $20.

Airtime rates are:
- $0.20/min for local calls on $100 & $75 top-ups
- $0.25/min for local calls on $50 & $25 top-ups

(BTW their phones are unlocked, which is great. I've used my Fido SIM card in my 7eleven phone but would not be able to do the reverse because Fido phones are locked to Fido SIM/network. Same with Rogers.)

They don't sell sim cards!! They are not network operators!! Simple!! Only network operators sell sim cards!!
If you don't have sim cards, you have to go to fido or rogers.
Too bad!

I have seen ads on CL from people selling their 7eleven SIM cards. If you're not in a rush, keep checking there..

Dunno.. what's wrong with the free phone deal?

Thanks Princess!!! How've you been? :)

Cell prices in Canada are a rip off. In the US, you can buy a Pay as you go cell for less than $20 including some minutes. Ebay has SIM cards and minutes too. If ever travelling to the US, getting one of their "disposable" cells is a good idea. One company, I cant recall which, allows you to have unlimited talk time between same carriers for $1/day and you only pay it the days you turn on the phone. This is great if you're going with a few people and you want to keep in contact with them while on a trip. All this through prepaid minutes, no credit check, no ID, no nothing.

7-11 is the way to go

The 711 Speakout is great. The basic phone is $60. It comes pre-activated with a phone# and some airtime. No need to call in or register (no name, credit card or ID required). The $25 airtime card is good for 1-year (most expire in 3-months). Per minute rate is 25 cents (if you buy the $75 airtime voucher, your rate drops to 20 cents/minute). The only monthly fee is a 99 cent 911 fee that is deducted from the pre-paid balance. It comes with Caller ID and voice mail. . It operates on the Rogers network, so I find coverage is good.

If someone refers you, you (and the person that referred you) gets a $10 airtime credit.

I just use it to make the discrete calls, then shut it off until next time.

There is a website that someone set up for info.
http://www.speakoutwireless.ca/

You can even get referral codes on the forums section of that website to get your extra $10 airtime credit

For someone using only a couple of minutes a day, I think it is the best deal going (plus no ID required, totally untraceable)

I bought my phone from telus and this is not my fisrt!

I have never ever used my real name! By the Phone or your choice that is a Pay And Talk Phone and with Telus there is no SIM card!

Activate it online and you get a 50$ credit, and make up a name!

Just remember your fake name if you ever need to call in and access your account or ask any questions! Mak up a fake birthday as well!

Telus has a packag with pay and talk called Unlitited 45 - Free Evenings - after 6 and weekeds, Free Voicemail, Free Incoming Calls and Picture/Video and text messaging!

Princess
Telus uses different technology. Not every single country uses this what telus uses. So, useless!

Totally understand your situation. But how many garbage calls do you get? So why not go directly to Fido?
