I watched the Canucks get throttled by Jets at the Young Stars tourney in Penticton. Hope for the sake of their fans that the veterans get the job done coz there ain't much NHL-ready help coming up from the prospect pipeline anytime soon. Another parting gift from Mr. Gillis.

By 'throttled' did you mean they lost 5-4 in OT after being down 4-2 with 3 to go? ;)

Its been a long off season with the Canucks missing the playoffs, looking forward to the new team with all the changes.Fans will have to be patient I think it will take a few years before they get to the top again.

I agree BL123, Benning made moves that he believes will make the Nucks competitive this year, there has been no mention from him or Trevor that they will be contending this year. A big difference as far as I`m concerned. I like the new direction of the team :)

Nick Bonino should be called Flanders, as in, Ned Flanders. Bonino totally sounds like something Flanders would say.

I dunno. This team still looks like a 9th to 12th place team right. Calgary, Edmonton and Phoenix aren't exactly gimmes, and I can't see the Canucks passing the other 3, even if Saint Joe takes a step back this year.
that's right. once you bounce the obvious cuts down to the minors, the team doesn't look much different from last year's same old-same old at all. here's hoping the change in management (and goaltending) can rev up a spark among the veterans or we will have another short hockey season

burrows is the one that surprises me. he seemed like a player on fire when the twins were feeding him tip-ins. on his own on other lines he's just a hard worker with no goal sense

Absolutely. Yes.
If Miller regresses and Lack improves, which is highly likely considering their respective ages, then the controversy is imminent.

I don't see where we climb over teams. And that's the frustrating part. We finish in 10th, we're missing out on McDavid and Eichel. But at least we'll have a ton of mid 30 something players!
Most pundits are guessing that san jose and colorado will regress, but minnesota looks vulnerable too.

The question is 'will the canucks be a 90+ point team?'
Will the lack of drama surrounding kesler and luongo, improvement in coaching, injection of new faces and new energy be enough?
I just can't see it.

Most of our core players are past their prime: sedins, burrows, vrbata, hamhuis, bieksa, miller
They will be better than last year but how much better will they be?
They are all more prone to long term injury which is scary considering our lack of quality depth.

Will our younger core (tanev, edler, kassian, bonino, lack) improve enough to improve the team?
A big maybe.
Will our rookies (vey, horvat, jensen, shinkaruk, corrado) be good enough to improve the team?
Another big maybe.
Our 'depth' players (stanton, higgins, hansen, richardson, sestito, dorsett) are good but not good enough to be difference makers against the top teams.
Then we have some minor leaguers (matthias, sbisa, weber) that fill out our roster and demonstrate our lack of depth.

A couple of long term injuries to our aging core like last year (burrows, henrik), and we are looking at another bottom six finish which will give us an outside chance at the top pick.
The sixth place team next year has a 7.5% chance of picking first.
The worst team has a 20% chance.
The best non-playoff team has a 1% chance.

Best case scenario is 90+ points and win one round.
Or maybe the best case scenario is:
80+ points, win the lottery and pick a franchise player?

I don't see Colorado falling off that much with that young core. Who has a better one-two punch of young centres than the Avs do with Duchene and MacKinnon? Gabriel Landeskog is a beast and the old man Iggy should bag a few goals playing with centres like that.

the concern in Col is with their defence which is average and goalie. Can he repeat his great season?
