Thats why it should be like the NFL , and a GM shouldbe able to cut a player without haven to pay his salary

I think we will need a much longer lockout than the last one for that to happen.

yes, the nfl is the only truly performance based league. you play well, you get paid well next year, you suck, you're fired. funny how the richest league in the world has the tightest cba. anyways the nhl is getting bad right now, but it will come to and end in 2 years when all these long term deals are still in place, and teams have nothing to spend. those free agents will have to settle for a lot less. the cap will not go up much. the league revenues are mainly based on attendance. total opposite of the nfl where all the money is in tv. all the stadiums in the nfl could be empty and the teams will still make money. back to the nhl, attendance is already at a high level. nowhere else to get more revenue, except god forbid, expansion. 3-5 years from now we could be hearing Bettman at the microphone welcoming Winnipeg and Portland into the league.

Still not as bad as the NBA with the 10 year contracts they throw out, and the flimsy cap they have. You can score 8 points shooting 20% and still make over 4 million a year in that league. A joke.

All this talk about the players gettin' greedy. How can anyone say that Carter isn't worth 3 mill a year? Look at what happened when Bertuzzi (fucker) had one good season. Poof! Six mill a year. .

I think that the difference is that Buttoozi HAD the potential to be a big impact player -- or maybe the perception among the NHL was that he had that potential -- and got paid for him to realize it (which he never did).

Carter doesn't have that same potential, but has something good going with the Sedins and should get a realistic salary somewhere between what he was getting and what the Sedins signed for ... (he got 1 mil? last year ... so maybe 1.75 - 2.0? this year)

Of course, the big question is whether the Sedins, now entering their putative 'prime' will make an impact or not: and whether it makes a difference whether they play with Carter or not.

The season is only 10 games old but I just wanted to revive this thread and reveal this particular posters (and a few others on this thread) adept (dripping sarcasm) knowledge of hockey. I think we can see that the Canucks made a smart move in not signing Carter and the Sedins are proving themselves to be superstars in their own right.

Yeah I wasn't sorry to see Carter go at the price he was asking, he benefited greatly from playing on the same line as two emerging stars. I think Carter has probably screwed himself financially, like you said it's early in the season, but he is only on pace for 20-25 pts this year. He got a little bit more money this season but he only got a one year contract and if he only ends up with 20 or so points at the end of the season his next contract will drop dramatically. He would have been better off signing with the Canucks for a little less money per season for a couple of seasons.

I don't think last years increase in production was a fluke or due mainly to Anson Carter. The fact that they weren't very consistent in their early 20's isn't that suprising and doesn't mean that their game will fall apart without Carter. I wouldn't be suprised to see them improve even more with or without Carter. Carter on the other hand had his career year at 31, now 32 I don't see a whole lot of upside potential with Carter and lots of potential for a big downside.
