TSN is reporting that the Vancouver Canucks will announce this week the signing of Marc Chouinard, most recently of the Minnesota Wild to a two year - 2 million dollar deal. I don't know what to think myself, I know Chouinard always seemed to play well against the Canucks but his career numbers are low. Obviously this closes the door on Carter re-signing and unless a decent sized salary is traded, the remainder of moves will be from within a la Manitoba Moose promotions.

we may still see carter if there's room in the cap ...

but Chouinard is ranked lower than Morrison and H. Sedin among centres so its more likely that its bye-bye to Linden at any price.

or the canucks are working on some kind of 'package' trade and morrison would be part of it (???) so this Chouinard is the new second-line centre (Sedins and Naslund top line) (???)

or if rumours about a naslund trade come to fruition, then there would be another $6mil for two years to work with -- could then sign Carter to $2 mil for two years and have another $4 mil for two years for other players.

Linden will likely re-sign at just over the minimum (450,00) and the remainder of the roster will be cheap, cheap unproven Manitoba Moose'rs (don't know the plural of Moose). I don't believe Morrison will be traded now or Naslund. Call me crazy but Naslund for Gagne is a bad deal for Philly as Gagne is a bona fide 45 -50 goal man with youth on his side and Naslund has been very up front about the rremaining length of his NHL career. There is supposed to be a Linden resolution this week but I can't see anything being done with Morrison (if at all) until he's skating again.

I still don't think this signals the end to Carter returning for sure. Chouinard is only getting a million per season so there is money left. I don't think this signing was made with a trade in the near future as part of the problem last year was the lack of productivity from the third and fourth lines. I think this will push Linden either down to the fourth line where he belongs ( I personally think he should retire but if he will play for the league minimum that is tolerable) and the remaining roster will be filled with bums and projects.

So are these the anticipated lines :

Naslund - Morrison - Cooke
Sedin - Sedin - ?? (Carter hopefully or Jason King)
Kesler - Chouinard - Burrows
Bouck - Rypien - Linden

looks pretty grim ...

poor Luongo has gone from a team that couldn't defend in front of him or score to keep them in the game to the same damn problem ...

:(

Jesse Schultz is another of the Moose who is expected to challenge for a roster spot this year. I think Brandon Reid is also on the radar for them this year to fill a spot. Either way I don't see how we are going to finish better than 9th or 10th. Luongo will need to steal several games for them this year with the offence they'll have.

A Checker Was NOT What I Had In Mind

When I see Chounard`s numbers the past few years and what we paid for him, are we becoming Minnesota west? It seems Nonis is placing high priority (not neccesarily a bad thing) on team defense. With this money committed to a checker, this almost forces Nonis to make a deal to bring in some speed and goal scoring. Just my 2 cents worth...

I think it is a good move to bring in defensive minded players that can break out with some offense. Fans may start to worry that the Canucks are getting to defensive, but I think they will play a fast transition game ... look after their end of the ice first, then move the puck up to their speedy forwards for a fast breakout. Chouinard sounds like one of those all round players that could have a breakout year if given the chance. He was suffocating in Minnesota. He also plays right wing, so that helps; although, his face-off skills are probably a higher priority. Nonuts is definitely up to something ... a big trade must be in the works.

Well I for one hate the new direction of the nucks. It looks like Noonis is managing the same way he dresses-- ultra conservative.

Yep , the nucks are beggining to look more and more like the WILD. Boring.

I sure hope I'm wrong, but i don't think so.

I doubt it. Vigneault and his coaching staff will decide the direction of this team. Nonis is just availing himself of opportunities. So far, he hasn't fared too badly. Vigneault is probably making the calls on these moves.

Yeah, pretty uninspiring so far. leads me to wonder if nonis is working on some sort of a trade to shake up the forward ranks. Gagne would be a good addition to the team if they can get him, but remember his stats last season were somewhat inflated with Forsberg as his center. Gagne's more like a 30-35 goal scorer, but given his young age, I would still take a straight Naslund for Gagne swap.

Looks like the defense needs a little more work. Preissing would've been a nice addition as a pp qb

This is what they expect ppl to pay $100 a ticket to go see? Looks like a really lame offensive team...

I think you can pencil Reid in as the 4th line center. Crawford didn't like him and I don't think they signed him for the 'Peg. They need that Carter/Selanne type million dollar re-build off the scrap heap. Bondra perhaps.

What about the D?
Ohlund-Bourdon
Mitchell-Krajicek
Salo-Bieksa
Brown as #7 if they re-sign him. Feelin' good about that?

By the way, watch for a Michael Grabner/Mason Raymond combo to debut the year after next. Both are speed demons. Grabner's a pure goal scorer on the right side and Raymond's a left shooting, playmaker at center. He may have turned out to be a real steal.

Anybody hear if the Canucks are bringing in Koltsov?

I heard on a radio interview a couple of weeks back that Nonis was talking with both Koltsov and Artem Chubarov about coming back for this year. Haven't heard any update since.
