I often disagree with Hume, but he put the argument against conditional citizenship eloquently and well.

The idea is pretty clear to me.People that HAVE or have GOTTEN Canadian citizenship if convicted of a heinous crime(such as they guy who stomed the Parliament bulding and killed the honour gaurd) can and will stripped of their Canadian citizenship and deported to the country they came from or would have come from had they not been born in Canada.

I will ask a simple question.Does anybody on this board actually THINK that the gunman who stormed the Parliament building after he shot the honour guard deserves any kind of sympathy? If he lived would any of you protest if he was stripped of his Canadian citizenship and deported?

Personally I have dual citizenship.I was born in Canada and I have UK citizenship.I have no near of this new fangled notion being applied to me as I am not a terrorist nor a nutjob who could be easily convinced that my home country/adoptive country is the "great Satan" and thusly go off on a personal jihad like a brainwashed zombie.

IMO this law is there to get rid of the crapulence alltogeather rather than bloating the costs to the justice system to keep these nutbars in jail.

Suppose you made a few innocuous statement on social media expressing sympathy for insert country separatists. Then some over zealous prosecutor nails you for some trumped up inciting terrorism charges and send your sorry ass back to the UK. Let's see how you would feel then?

i agree with storm rider

if an individual commits or seriously plans an act of voilent terrorism against Canada, then it should be obvious to anyone with one eye and half an asshole that the terrorist hates Canada and doesn't really want to be here either... they themselves should be clamoring loudly for deportation from this land of satan

it's either that or bring back the rope and hang 'em high!

Pretty fucking lame sentiment is all I can say.I am not a zombie who feels compelled to post on social media( I think facebook/twitter followers are idiotic lambs) the only precedent og revoking citizenship was for a confessed member of the Toronto 18.The guy confessed to wanting to commit acts of terrorism.Do you actually want to defend that douchebag and say he should be given leniency?....do you???????

If so you are definately not a Patriot and you have no care for Canada....you just want to appease the political correctness that abounds and get bent over and screwed by the media.....at the same time I imagine you think Suzuki is some kind of saint who can live the life of a millionaire and at the same time tell you that you have to live in squalor to "save the earth" whilst he lives the high life and you live in the actual squalor that he imposes on you because he "knows what is best for you".

Judging by your recent posts SR, might I suggest a high fiber diet and some omega 3. I'm pretty sure posting on Perb constitute posting on social media!

Look I get it, the intention of the law may be good but what's there to prevent its misuse. Look at the 3 strike law in the states and how many people are locked away for life for some mediocre mid to low level drug crimes. Even the country with the highest rate of incarceration on earth, its the US btw, is beginning to realize it has to reform. I just hope that in time you will see it too...

I am not against it in principle but I am concerned about the possible misuse of this statute because as we all know that never happens, right?

Look left. Way left.
These type of laws are easy to abuse. Playing politics. We have an overabundance of laws for dealing with criminals. We have so many laws that you are a criminal every day whether you want to be or not. They can haul you away without any reason anyway. Why bother with laws and the legal system. Look at all the money we could save. The countries productivity would soar if we put a shovel in the hand of all the lawyers.

Never in my god damned funking life have I ever imagined my country would even make it possible to strip me of the citizenship I was born with!

My father was born in the UK and just like the guy they are trying to do this now to according to the government I could be stripped of my Canadian rights and shipped to a place I've only ever visited as a tourist. I hold no UK passport.

All I need to do is start a blog promoting the Palistine state!

I find it just as sick to want to hang people who are clearly sick. Like the homeless guy who stormed the legislature. Clearly he had mental issues.

of course he had mental issues... anybody who brings a lever action 30-30 to a gunfight definitely has mental issues

he chose suicide by firing squad rather than the rope as his way to go out

trouble is he murdered an unarmed guy by shooting him in the back in the process

lots of people have mental issues, but if those mental issues cause them to commit serious enough anti-social acts, then society should have the right to protect themselves by ending their existence

No matter what you do, provided you didn't obtain citizenship fraudulently, once you have it no one has the right to remove it IMO.

The scenario where people who are born here as Canadian citizens can be stripped of citizenship and deported to a country they have never been to simply because their parents had citizenship somewhere else is particularly troubling.

As the law stands, a peaceful protester on Burnaby mountain... if part of say, Greenpeace... with a dual British passport.... will be stripped of citizenship and summarily sent packing to England.

This is not a "future what if" abuse of power. This is a "here and now" and "very real" abuse of power that has been enabled by Harper.

It wouldn't take much to start labeling all sorts of people terrorists, or other forms of treason... all to forward political or ideological goals. All it takes is someone will to push those boundaries and make use of the power they now have... making the most out of the existing law.

Welcome to 1984, and I really wish I was joking about that.
