I'm not sure who Eric is, either way nothing is going to stop the trade. But I'm happy the ladies or who ever is working, is working in a safe environment.

I am sure Erics not very happy this could bring hie reign of terror to an end.
How will this affect Eric? (Eric is owner of Nevadas in Winnipeg, where some of us go for sessions with service providers - full service if we want)
I am curious about what some think will result.

The Supreme Court ruling will probably amount to nothing in practical terms. The current prostitution laws will still be in effect for another year and Parliament has that time to introduce new legislation. Even then, Parliament could ask the Court for an extension if legislation is at least tabled.

There is talk that the law to replace the existing one will target clients and not workers. Cops may go just the opposite way and become over zealous in enforcing existing laws before they are struck down. I don't go to MP's, but even if I did, I would be staying the hell away for at least a year - or until a new law is in place so I know the rules of the game.

I think the Harper government will now try to criminalize prostitution itself (i.e. the exchange of money for sex) and will also go after the johns, by making it illegal to contact/approach someone in an attempt to procure sex, which is what they've done in Sweden and other European countries. This is not over at all, not by a long shot. The SCOC ruling just throws out the existing laws and encourages the feds to think up different laws. We should in no way think that they're going to turn a blind eye to brothels, or just sit idly by and allow Amsterdam-type 'sex malls' to be set up.

Agreed. This could be more of a disaster than a blessing. Harper has a majority, and he will do what he wants to do, not what Canadians want. He has proven that over and over.

Always be careful what you hope for, criminalizing clients could drive the game way underground.
Which is no good for any one.

I agree, but that is the current talk. Harper is very conservative, he wouldn't be too worried about the impact to those involved, more concerned with imposing his 'moral code' on others.

I have a feeling that for personal reasons a lot of Harper cronies would not want to se prositution criminalized

They claim to be a "law and order" government, and they can't let the Conservative base think that they're doing nothing and just letting the "perverts and whores have their way, putting our grandchildren at risk". I was in Calgary when this news was announced, and that's the language being used on a right-wing radio call-in show.

Mark my words, they will bring in legislation that will criminalize the hobby for us johns (at the very least) and perhaps SP's as well. Five years from now we may be in a situation like the US, where the cops are setting up sting operations in hotel rooms, arresting us guys after they advertise some Korean or Quebecois hottie on BP or EC. This is very much a game-changer.

I love all the guys coming on here and pontificating about what Harper and the Conservatives are going to do about this, when Harper and the Conservatives themselves probably have no idea at this moment...

The SPs arguing this case just won a major victory and put a huge dent in the whole "legislating about prostitution is for the good of women [and society]" argument, and less than 24 hours after the SCC agreed unanimously with their argument, you are all crying in your beer over it. Sheesh!

For what its worth, I'll tell you one group that's absolutely ecstatic over this ruling: firearms owners. That's right, a group of people who tend to be EXTREMELY hardcore supporters of the CPC and Harper - but who tend to the libertarian side of the party. The reason: they see this ruling as a possible game-changer in the fight against the ridiculous firearms legislation imposed by previous Liberal governments. (The explanation: complicated and probably longer than you want to read, but trust me, it's definitely being discussed right now by many of Canada's top firearms lawyers.)

Instead of whining into your wine and yakking about the evil moralistic Conservatives and what they're going to do to you now, maybe go talk to that section of the party and work out a strategic alliance.

Just a suggestion, but a far more useful one than all the whinging I've been reading on this board.

As much as they like to make you beleive they are lily white legislators are some of the biggest drunks and skirt chasers in the country I am sure they dont want to kill there own hobby. My bet is they will do nothing let it become law and let the cities deal with it themselves.
