I think this is a pretty solid line up with most of the team being healthy or close to being healthy for Sochi 2014. Nice to see Hamhuis and Lu in the line up.

Here is the Team Canada men's hockey lineup for Sochi 2014

John Tavares
Steven Stamkos
Patrick Sharp
Corey Perry
Rick Nash
Patrick Marleau
Chris Kunitz
Ryan Getzlaf
Matt Duchene
Sidney Crosby
Jeff Carter

PK Subban
Alex Peitrangelo

that was as exciting as LeBron announcing his arrival to the Heat.
the whole event was quite silly if you really think about it.

Totally agree. Or Marleau over Couture, given Stevie Y indicated his injury had nothing to do with the decision?!? Also, Vlasic over Seabrook?!?!

The reality though is the fact that they could easily have a second team that is every bit as strong as this one. Nice problem to have.

It's the Canadian way though to second guess every decision  isn't it?
Agree with you guys on those points. And Bouwmeester?
BTW, the Team Canada and yanks are the only 2 teams composed entirely of NHL players, the Russions are using 10 KHL players, the Swedes will use 12 Swede elite leaguers.
I like our chances.

I'd rather have St.Louis, Giroux, Seabrook and Letang on the team. I'd probably take out Carter, Nash, Hamhuis and Vlasic.

Still a pretty strong team. Though I think the Swedes, Americans and Russians are still stronger teams.
Some conspiracy theorists think Yzerman left MSL off because he wants to save his 38 year old legs for the playoffs.

I'd take Giroux over Nash for sure, but I think Hamhuis is a good add since he's supposed to be a relatively good skater and safe, probably will play with Weber. Not so sure about Vlasic though.

Would think they would have gone with someone other than Mike Smith though.

Keep in mind pap, those 10 KHL players and 12 Swedes are going to have no problems getting adjusted to the oversized rinks. I see it as a distinct advantage, at least for the first few games.
It always seems like Canada has the most problems on the big ice seeing as how the 2 Olympics they got gold in were in Vancouver and Salt Lake City.

Just for the record, SLC was Olympic size ice. Vancouver was the 1st and only olympic hockey tournament on NHL size rinks.

Only 3 players from 2006 are on the 2014 team: Luongo, Boumeester and Nash.

Does anyone recall how severely we got massacred in Turin (I know, we'd all prefer to obliterate it from memory). Our 7th-place squad featuring Thornton, St. Louis (both in their primes in '06) and, especially, Nash, were a national embarassment. A 30-year old St. Louis had his chance at the Olympics already. Picking Nash for Sochi is a mistake. He's too slow.

The last four games of Team Canada's most recent foray onto big ice at the Olympics:

Switzerland 2 Canada 0
Finland 2 Canada 0
Canada 3 Czech Republic 2
QF Russia 2 Canada 0

Rick Nash scored no goals in five games.
Canada's high scorers had 2 goals total!!

Hitchcock explained that Team Canada's big, slow forwards gassed themselves in 2006 forechecking the speedy Europeans on the big rink.

I would get rid of Luongo in heartbeat...the guy can't handle pressure...

That's a pretty big risk. St. Louis could also feel betrayed and demand a trade out of Tampa. And Stevie Y of all people knows how important it is to play for Canada at any level. I don't buy it.

You have a gambling problem. Gentleman's bet?

2010 Olympics: 5-0, a 1.76 GAA and Gold Medal winner. Oh yeah, he really can't handle the pressure.
Luongo was the fifth-best goalie in 2010. We won despite him not because of him.

Canada averaged 5 goals per game on the small ice in 2010.

Canada averaged 2.5 goals per game in Turin.

Hitchcock is a genius who won't allow us to repeat the offensive zone forechecking disaster in 2006 but look out for that wicked Swedish D!

One has to be content to see Team Canada's oldest players will be 34 years old. Kunitz makes his first Olympics at 34.

I remember the look on Niedermeyer's face in 2010 - at 34 and watching Toews, Perry, and Crosby he too could sense decline's relentless pursuit of his tired legs. But the Captain's savvy, experience, steady hand and unflappable temperament made him a critical cog in our gold-medal run. Indeed, it was Niedermeyer who carried the puck up the ice and into the US end on the play that led to the GWG.

Jaromir Jagr? Teemu Selanne is in his 6th Olympics (!). And he skipped 1994 because he was a pro. Once into one's 40s, players can become humiliated at elite levels. They end up looking sad and pitiful, ruining our memories of their youth and vigour.

Old-man rosters smack of bygone days, nostalgia and particularly, of desperation.

The glaring omission to me besides Martin St.Louis is Joe Thornton. With most incumbent players I think you have to play your way off the team or someone must outplay you to take your spot. At the time of selection, Thornton was the NHL leader in assists. He has been great for the young guys like Hertl and Couture and his defensive game has improved. Conversely, it perplexes me how Rick Nash is on this team with his play the last couple of seasons. he has done everything to play his way off the team, yet he remains. Maybe its because he is a winger but his position could be filled by St.Louis who is a more deserving candidate than he this time around. Granted, Nash has been great for us internationally in the past, but this is about catching lightning in a bottle and its not what have you done for me, its what have you done for me lately. The other players I have mentioned are more deserving than him IMO based on that logic.
