Coronavirus: Travellers to pay over $2000 for mandatory hotel quarantine, Trudeau announces | FULL - YouTube

How many variants of Covid is going to come around. Trudeau and Biden might just shut it down for years, or make it so expensive that only the rich can travel.

The cure is worse than the disease. I am lost at the policies while opened up states like Florida, North Dakota have fewer covid cases per 1000 people compared to very restricted states.
Could you provide examples I would like to compare some of these open vs closed states.

A hell of a lot of people are dying in the Dakotas. Florida is bad too. Both a lot worse than Canada.

Honda, I agreed that the strict shutting down police will not control this pandemic since the virus will continue mutate some degree. The key to control this pandemic at least in US is the vaccine. There are more studies coming out from the countries like Israel that had vaccination over 50% of the population and the studies showed how effective the vaccine was preventing from the number of cases and from developing the serious illness and death. At least Pfizer vaccine was effective against new strain of Covid too. There is a developing study comparing California with very strict Covid rules vs Florida. The study is looking at mortality rate, hospitalization, economy of the states, mental health, and others. I am very interested in reading the study result in the future. 100 years ago, there was Spanish flu devastating the world. There were 4 waves of the spike and were finally controlled after 2 years probably with a herd immunity. Right now, there are estimating up to 1/3 of Americans have some immunity against Covid. Some scientists estimated 25% death across the world from the Spanish flu.
What I am hoping is that this vaccine will help control this pandemic soon so that we all can enjoy our life including lots of travel!

I find it really hard to feel sorry for Point Roberts. They are only part of the US because some British mapmakers screwed up back in the 1800's, and never accounted for the Tsawassen peninsula sticking out into Boundary Bay. Now there's this absurd little nub of America, cut off from the rest of it. In recent decades they've been sustaining themselves through cross-border shopping, which drains our economy up here. So when I hear their residents crying to the Canadian news media about how cut off they are down there because of the border closures, with all their businesses closing, I can only say "well get annexed by Canada then - problem solved!". :sneaky:

Wealth in Canada comes from selling real estate. In British Columbia until recently from laundering cacino money. Canadians bad managers of Canadian economy. In a nation of zero organic population increase, virtually every new building goes up as a result of immigration. What appalles me, virtually all the tools and parts to build, work against balancing Canadian budgets through imports. After the building completion, virtually all appliances and furnishings work against balancing Canadian budgets through imports.

Canada WAS a wealthy country. Now, Canada is a country that has wealthy people that reside in it.

My mother, from Switzerland and my father, from Hong-Kong (mix of Korean/Chinese), found Canada as a perfect mid-point for international business to link Asia with the US and also Europe.

They also knew they were going to have children and felt very comfortable about the future of safety and security in a place such as Vancouver.

At that time, there was a booming middle class and there were a lot of jobs for almost everyone. Unions, trades, professionals, and a good life was a very real thing. Opening up a business was very easy and with some grit and hard work, one could carve out a very good living.

Towards the end of the century, Vancouver seemed to change into a haven for the proceeds of a lot of questionable international funds but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

PRC has had insanely explosive growth, creating more multimillionaires than there are people in the entire Canadian population.

Places like UBC, are for profit businesses first, educators second. The errections they get seeing how much they can charge foreigners for tuition encourages the satalitte family. Father works in China running a factory making a few million a year or more, children go to Canada and learn the international language of business, English. The wife and child have a comfortable, clean, safe life and free everything.

Less fortunate but willing immigrants will put 10 family members in a home, work lesser desired but needed jobs, and live a better life.

None of these things are inherently bad things but when things go sour, humans want to find something to point at.

Blame India, blame Hong Kong, blame China, blame the criminals, blame two income households, blame Bitcoin, blame low interest rates. Blame the natives, blame government

My parents, who sadly passed away far too young, told me that a child complains, an adult does something about it.

Do things suck here? It depends. It’s absolutely not the place our parents came to a generation ago and we also don’t live the same life or want the exact same things. The world is also a very different place today compared with 1950.

I remember my family putting me in Japanese lessons at 3 years old because Japan was about to be worlds biggest economy. A lot has changed since 1990.

Coming to Canada still has a lot of appeal when compared with living in most other countries. People come here for a reason, rich or poor.

The future of Canada is not a bright one. We have spent ourselves into oblivion and we have a very corrupt government. We also have a generation of people that are either blind or unaware of how the world really works. It’s much more cool to be “woke”.

Its the end of an era. I’m also accepting of it. It’s scary for many but we will find a way to survive. Just because Canada as a country will likely change and the world will drastically change, it doesn’t mean we don’t have the opportunity to find success or have a great life.

In many ways I think we all have some of the best opportunities to create success but it will look different from the nuclear family model that became the staple of success post WW2.

I do feel for a lot of people. The US is much the same way. I remember it being so prosperous in the 1990s for so many people. I now have a home in one of the more prestigious neighborhoods in Los Angeles and while the property itself is exquisite, the neighborhood shows how bad things have become for the masses.

Appreciate your post. We have one economy here and that’s real estate. Everything is tied to it and so that makes everyone, banks, lawyers, the government itself, push the agenda and it’s extremely dangerous.

A lot of people that feel priced out, want prices to crash, but a crash would obliterate the entire province.

Elon Musk says a truth that has been the model for success in a country since the dawn of time. We need to make stuff.

What does BC make?

*crickets chirping*

This is the root of the problem. Have you noticed that whenever the public complains about home prices and the government does something that will fix it, it only gets worse. Why is that?

It’s because we don’t fix the problem. Foreign buyers tax because that’s the problem! House prices go up.

We need a stress test from mortgage brokers to keep things in line. House prices go up.

Yes interest rates are messing things up a bit but the issue is that we are a city with no economic output. Especially now since tourism is in the toilet and resources are highly regulated (which from an environmental standpoint makes sense).

We had marijuana but the US ended up getting ahead of us and now we’ve lost that illegal export.

There is still hope, but we need to start making things and the government needs to start supporting businesses that can contribute to the job market and the economy overall.

I was wrong, USA is a wealthy country by far. Look at what Biden wants now

1. 50k college debt forgiven

2. 3k per child payment

I wonder how does 50k in debt go poof!! Gone- do the banks just get a note saying You really should not hold XXX responsible anymore, set them free.
We expect colleges to not pay the teachers, janitors, food vendors, landscapers. I know the middle class has to suck up the bill but who cares I get your future votes.

Its has not even been a month since socialist Joe has been president and my God, what has happened?

I looked it up a while ago and for every $1 CDN Canadians owe Americans owe $3 U.S. (or about $4 CDN). When you factor in the U.S. population is roughly 10X the size that adds up to a lot of debt.

Student debt makes a very few at the top rich. All student debt could have been erased for what Trump gave a few billionaires in tax breaks.

The whole system in the US and Canada is destroying the middle class and making the very rich richer.

My opinion on the general topic of wealthy country.

Making stuff is the key to wealth and financial independence. At least for people and in general for companies. Governments are different and if the corruption were removed would stand by to provide "guidance" and infrastructure. Guidance here being a multi-faceted topic that could go on ad infinitum.

Regarding making stuff, Canada is an absolute world leader in exporting jobs. We send our raw material all over the world so others can make stuff that we then buy.

We are also soft on charging what our exports are really worth. Oil royalties come to mind but let's not dwell on that one.

So lets go back to the 60-70's when big projects were affordable. At that time we should have had east west pipelines and refineries along the way to make our own plastics, material developments etc and to eliminate any need for foreign oil. We should have been building more than just basic sawmills and pulp and paper mills. Should have had a huge industry around wood working - a Canadian Ikea if you like. Actually let's go back to the 50's and NOT destroy the Avro Arrow and build our own aerospace business. Not cut R&D budgets which provide fresh ground for new innovative stuff we can make. Keep the major universities as public institutions and not force people to go into massive debt to get their degree. Really gets into the topic of doctor vs plumber in terms of ROI. The list goes on. Mistakes of the past and it seems we don't learn.

Anyway, this all comes to mind as I begin the process of collating all my details for my taxes which is coming up ...

Complete closure for good. No one is coming in unless its to deliver goods or a pro athlete. Maybe an concert performer once a while. The country still needs some entertainment.

Canada would set the course for a safe new world this way. Other countries may follow. Or those that can afford it.
Uh, it would be obliterated from the map once its uncle ceased to provide the bulk of its civil defence. Thankfully it is a pretty large map - so it would take a while.

Can someone tell me why the North USA agents are so tough and the South agents are so easy going?

This past year during my 2 trips to TJ, I was not even asked upon return what I was doing there. Showed them my Nexus and told to go. I did not have to show proof I was there for essential travel like Dentist or MD visit or to see a dying relative.

Your question mostly makes no sense. Rather, the answer is a function of what was long the most visited border city on earth compared to the longest free border in the world.

One is so cold and mostly remote that there are relatively few people on it. The other has so many people zooming back and forth on a given day, that priorities cannot be some pooner who obviously went down for a day of fun and frolic with some hot young women (with whom the border agents in the area are very familiar).

Consider that border agents are deeply trained in noticing the oddity, and as such the masses don't really draw their attention.

You remind me of a friend with whom I once crossed the border, who was just aghast at the border agent not having asked more than one question, even though this person had crossed earlier that day on a passport from a 3rd country.

The question (asked quickly and casually) was "Where're ya headed?" The answer was the same as it usually is.

The next ten minutes were filled with my friend's seeming horror at this.

I could only attempt to remind him that "you're not the boogy man, though, are you..."

Biden wants to forgive $10,000 of college debt.

That adds up to peanuts compared to the trillions of dollars of tax cuts Trump gave the wealthy and the corporations, and the 5 or 6 trillion Bush threw away in Iraq.
