You may be clean, but she may be red flagged for something that happened in her past.

Not necessarily criminal, but as benign as having been caught trying to sneak something in at the border.

Or, being in a car that did. You'd be surprised at the amount of info they have at their disposal...

if your a canadain and have nothing to hide , just answer the questions you are required to answer. they are getting too american now. i had them start asking me a bunch of questions and i told them it was none of their business. politely. i told them i would co-operate by answering only questions relating to my customs form. what i purchased, how long i was out of country etc. my personal business is my business and i told him that. and if he had any other questions not related then charge me and i want to talk to my attorney!!! fuck these guys. last time i checked we were still called canadian and not americans. be polite but let them know you are not going to take shit or abuse from them. that is if you have nothing to hide.
Were you always treated like that in the States?

So all Americans are shit to you?

Of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of crossings I have made in either direction - and in any other country for that matter, I have encountered only one that was having a bad day. He bitched at me because I was holding my Customs declaration between my lips - both my hands were holding baggage. Other than that insignificant occurrence, I have only encountered polite and professional border officials; even when a secondary search was initiated.

I haven't seen Gestapo-like posturing at any time, so I am puzzled which crossing the guards you dealt with are at, and what year this happened. Perhaps somewhere in Germany in the thirties or forties? Seriously, it comes down to attitude. Borders guards are human after all, and if you come across as rude, you'll likely get the same in return.

your mom says hi.
i heard blaine is really bad. i've heard many complaints about that crossing. other then that since moving here close to ten years ago i have only crossed the border once and that was to go with a buddy to cash in some american savings bonds down in point roberts and we had no problem at all.

since being the only other times have been coming back into vancouver from international destinations and i've never had a problem.

back in ontario i crossed the border a little more but not too often. usually just to get chicken wings at frank and teresa's anchor bar in buffalo.

and for some reason our normally polite canadain customs agents are thinking they should be like the gastapo to the south........!!!
OK... I apologize for misunderstanding your post.

To the Canadian customs credit, I haven't found any troubles and hassles from them every time I travel to Canada, whether it be Ontario, Alberta or BC.

Well... I guess it all depends on the customs person.

Hmmmmmmm.... I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that terrorists were caught bring explosives across the border so they could attack LA New years 2000.

Almost every time I cross the Canadian border they ask me if I have a weapon in my car. I wonder of it is because a large group of Americans carry weapons.

I do not mind if I am asked the question. Hell, I would not mind if my car is searched. I am entering a foreign country so I should submit to their questions or stay home.

goodlube...my suggestion to you is if you don't like the way Americans treat you when you enter my country....then stay home.

.........mmmmmmmmm.....anchor bar.....love those suicide wings......

i crossed into ny at the buffalo crossing, border guard was really quite understanding, had to do something for work, but made the mistake of calling it work.....luckily he understood and let me go, he did say that he could have held me there for a lot of hours with questioning.

Maybe you should ask Mick Jagger about Canadian Customs

I've crossed the border countless times and have never had any problems....the worst was in France and even that was no big deal.
Like Luckydog said..... I want to enter their country so I'll answer their questions.

I don't mind that our customs officials, bureaucrats and government is criticized by the rest of the world, but I have a big problem if they generalize that criticism toward all American civilians.

I am an American and I don't agree with a lot of things that my government does, but to equate what American politicians do with American citizens is just BULLSHIT!!!!

While our customs officials are accused of being a Gestapo. I don't think it's that extreme. It's true that they have to be dickheads due to the heavy security since 9/11, but there are customs in other countries that are heckuva lot worse and dare I say corrupt.

Regarding Canadian Customs, like I said, I had never encountered any problems on my trips to Canada. I thought they were more polite than American Customs officials IMO.

A few years ago, I was going through Customs at Jakarta's International Airport in Indonesia, and was being processed by an Immigration official, which is pretty typical in most countries. North Americans take it for granted that they don't have to pass through their own country's Immigration when leaving home. Well, this guy asks me a few questions, stamps my passport and hands it to me. However, he doesn't let go. I look up at him and he asks, "Aren't you going to take care of me for letting you go?" I curtly snapped my passport from his grip, and said, "Sorry Sir, but my plane is departing in a few minutes", and just high-tailed it out of there. I'm told this is even more common for the locals when they travel out of the country, and they usually hand over a few rupiahs to avoid being searched.
