Calgarians - Osteria de Medici?

Given the recent blowup of the Oilers and their $18 000 dinner tab there, I was just curious if any Calgarians have eaten at Osteria de Medici and if they liked it? I got curious and looked it up, and seems like a lot of the food chat boards mentioned overpriced food and bad service, which makes me think maybe the Flames (hehehe) recommended it to their Oiler "friends."

Over 2 hands plus a mouthful big
When you have a large group it is very easy for the restaurant to add extras to the tab. After all who will recall over the course of the evening if the group ordered 18 bottles of wine or 24?

4 platters of appys or 5?

etc etc

It's been a few years since I last dined there, but I did enjoy it -- food was excellent, service alright -- but as I recall the prices were a bit on the high side. I'd certainly repeat if I had the occassion to when next in Calgary.

That's what I'm thinking. The Oilers themselves frequent places like Piccolino so I can't question their culinary tastes.

Anyway, I think this debacle is hardly newsworthy even on a slow news day. But it's funny to see this dumbass restaurant owner, after drawing publicity to himself, now being investigated for liquor infractions!

I'm willing to bet that a winning team like the Blackhawks with all of their young guns would not indulge in shooters, schnaps, brandies and Dom Pernignon champagne after losing.

Where is the discipline in a group of millionaire athletes near the bottom of the entire league mid-season? Perhaps, just perhaps, there is too much money in the hands of athletes who have let their fans down on the ice and now off the ice.

This is not the restaurant owner's problem - the responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of the the GM and his management/coaching team, and on all of the players including those wearing the 'C' and the 'A's.

No one in the Oilers organization has said that they did not consume all that they are alleged to have consumed. Rather, they just 'wined' about being overcharged and not getting a 'professional team discount' after the fact.

The party obviously helped the Oilers improve their game faces...or did it? Only several nights later they iced the same team that was in the restaurant and added Fernando Pisani BUT achieved the same losing result.

It surely tells this former Oiler fan and the average Joe who can only keep his head above water financially and cannot afford to eat at Osteria de Medici at anytime, including on New Year's Eve, that these athletes are scam artists and that they are taking advantage of us (the fans) who pay their freight. It is just as well that Heatley continued on to a hockey team, rather than being tarnished / varnished by the guys who distinguished themselves on New year's Eve. Kevin Lowe has bigger problems than Mac T and no Heatley.

No discipline = no focus = players being kids and doing what they want, when they want = a hockey club of individuals = more Edmonton losses = tons of excuses = more abuse of fans, etc, etc.
The next thing we will hear is that some player brought a weapon into the dressing room......who or what is going to have created the disciplined atmosphere to stop him?
[I know this is an extreme exaggeration...but you never know. If they can't control their collective drinking and partying actions with management in attendance- anything is possible.]

There does seem to be a lack of leadership in the Oilers dressing room. I mean, that's just the perception I have as an outsider. I used to think it was MacT who was the problem, but there's no way you can tell me Tom Renney and Patty Quinn isn't qualified to coach this team.

The restaurant may have overserved alcohol and maybe overcharged...but a lot of high end restaurants overcharge for food and drinks...that's why I avoid Ruth Chris and goto Outback Steakhouse.

Good luck. Taylor Hall, Jason Eberle and Sidney Crosby could not help this group of Oiler leadership and players. So what if they were intoxicated - some defence "I was drunk therefore I am not responsible".
