Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Good afternoon gentlemen and ladies,

I am planning on buying a new car in the next year. Most likely next spring/summer.
Thought I would pick the brains of all the car guru's here on PERB for opinions on what Jethro should buy.

Here are my criteria:
Budget - Up to $65,000.00. I can afford more but I am willing to spend so much on an asset that depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot.
New vs Used - Preferably a couple of years old. Can't justify buying a new car when the value drops by 33% as soon as you turn the key.
Winter driving - I live in Winnipeg!
Decent power - I don't plan on racing the thing but when I want to pass someone pulling a 35' trailer on my way up to Winnipeg Beach I can.
Reasonable gas mileage - Don't need the most efficient vehicle on the planet but no gas guzzlers either
Electric/hybrid? - If it meets my above criteria I would consider it.
Stylish - Goes without saying. This will be the Jethro Mobile! :)
SUV or not? - I drive an SUV now. I might consider another one but but my days of "needing" the extra room to haul stuff or transport my daughter and her friends places, are behind me.
NO Trucks for this guy - Just have no need for one.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Cheers
J

How about a crossover SUV like a GMC terrain or equivalent. AWD they handle like a car but have lots of room for vittles. The new ones suck but prior to 2018 they meet all your criteria.

I rented a Toyota Highlander All Wheel drive recently. I was quite impressed with everything about this vehicle. Very smooth ride and handled a full load at highway speeds for 6 hours straight.

Checking their website the Hybrid AWD is available as is the 6 cylinder AWD. Either vehicles, fully loaded will hit $50+ K

while a crossover suv is the way most people are going these days (myself included after jumping into a 2 year old Ford escape recently, and I love it, plenty of room and power with the 2.0L ecoboost and awd) a crossover suv isn't going to pull a 35' trailer, only a truck or full sized suv will do that, so I guess you have to narrow down the uses you want to use it for, and go from there.

For less than half of what you want to spend, you can buy a new Honda Accord with a 252HP turbo 2L and 10 speed auto. that drives like something that costs 3 times as much.

well I read it as when he wants to pass someone pulling a trailer lol...as in he was pulling it, still, my suggestion stands, Ford Escape Titanium trim with the 2.0L ecoboost is a great fully loaded comfy car, good on gas, can run reg gas not premium, could prob get a 2016-2017 for under 40K

Toyota Highlander or Nissan Pathfinder, similar size and features.
Highlander has better build quality, Nissan has lots of lease returns so might be cheaper.
Check Birchwood Toyota and Birchwood Nissan websites.

I rented a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, very fast but got less than 10mpg driving like an idiot. Piece of junk but lots of fun.

Minutes ago in a private driveway I saw a beautiful clean mint green 1999 Mustang for $1999. At Seventh Avenue New Westminster a couple of blocks east of 22nd Street Station SkyTrain. If you're driving, its off Twentieth Street, at a small white house behind the bushes, third from the corner, north side on the right.

I'd go with a 2012 Lexus LS460. Yes it's old, but it's Toyota so it'll live forever. Timeless, classy and rides like a dream. Comes with an AWD option too. Yearly maintenance could be a little above average but nowhere as demanding as a BMW or Audi.

Screw the car...go for a Nissan Frontier crew cab Pro 4X with a 6 speed manual if you are lucky enough to find one.Best truck in it's class for EVERYTHING and it is like a Buck Rogers spaceship that is totally loaded.Power everything and heated mirrors/seats/AC/GPS/Bluetooth/Sonar back up cam....ALL of the bells and whistles and that 4 Litre V6 with the manual transmission lets you squeeze all 260 ponies out of the engine.Oh yeah it is a Nissan and built very well....the same class of truck by Toyota will cost you 12-14 grand more and it will have a sewing machine for an engine that has planned obslolecence because it has a timing BELT instead of a timing CHAIN.The Nissan also has a locking rear differential to go along with it's 4X4 drive system. The Honda Ridgeline is a POS that costs even more than the Toyota and the GMC Canyon is typical of the crap the GM produces....shit for performance/towing/off roading and since it is Domestic it is shit for longevity.

I'm renting that Nissan Frontier crew cab Pro 4X this week. (Quite the mouthful). It runs quite nice, and quiet on the highway.

The Lexus LS460 in AWD is the LS600.

My opinion would be to get a crossover vehicle. Built on a car frame, so fuel efficient and handles well. A one or two year old lease return.
I really like the Volvo XC40 and XC60.
The Lexus RX200t will last forever.

Based on what you have said you really don't seemed interested in a truck or even an SUV anymore.
Take a look at the Camry Hybrid. Even a fully loaded model is well within your budget. You could spend more but why?

If buying from a Dealer, just don't pay the "Documentation Fee"

Every car that I have bought, I have refused to pay this ripoff fee, the dealer will say it's necessary but it's not true.

I tell him to take it off or I walk and they always will remove this made up fee.

Stay away from Mercedes they have some quality issues to sort out on several models.
I know people who have been happy with BMW X3s

You’re on the prairies. Winter is hard on cars as is how people treat them so get one off lease and save some $$$.

The beautiful Fraser Valley !
I would suggest a 2016 Audi A7 AWD .

A very sleek Car, that would be more than capable of handling the Challenges of a Winnipeg Winter, in Style !

I would also suggest coming out to Vancouver, to purchase one . We have a very affluent sector of our Population, who are quite financially capable of flipping a luxury Car such as this every couple Years .

Here's an example of a 2016 at a local Dealer, with just over 50K Km, for $47,500 plus Taxes . Can't forget the main Pimp ? LOL

Here's a Video, with a little more in depth Information .

Hope it helps ?
