Can anyone explain why so many businesses don't respond to enquiries?

We've all experienced SP's who advertise, you contact them politely, often with a compliment, but they don't bother to respond, which I still don't understand, but it also seems to be common among businesses and service providers of all kinds.
I can't count how many times I've left a message and never received a response of any kind. I've unfortunately hired people who maybe weren't the best, just because they actually took the time to get back to me. What's the deal?

I gave one company an $8,000 contract, after two others didn't get back to me. Is business so good that people can ignore potential jobs?

An old saying in the trades, " chicken today, feathers tomorrow " Making cash hand over fist one year, and you can't beg borrow or steal one the next.

Trying to get responses from some outfits is worse than trying to get a sexual response from a wife (wives etc)

Obviously business is so good they don't need my money.

It could be due to too much work, too much money, to where they don't feel they need to reply to everyone, which is a short sighted position to take, but sometimes it can be just bad front desk people, spam filters, or just bad overall organizational skills. I've run into this myself, and it is frustrating. I recently made a large software purchase and when I dug into it I discovered some features I want are an extra cost with nothing of this mentioned in the pre-sale, and without these features the software is basically useless to me. My inquiries via email have fallen on deaf ears and there is no call back from phone calls. It's a legit company but I feel it is a matter of their being too much business to bother with me. It's in AI, so it's a hot field right now.

The worst is when they DO respond. Then you take the day off work so yo can be at home for when the contractor comes. But they don't show up, because they got a bigger job elsewhere...meanwhile you just lost a day's worth of wages.

Could be multiple reasons:

-Don’t care
-Too busy
-Are occupied at the moment then forget.
-Something wrong with their computer or email.
-Scatter brains
-As previous guy mentioned seems like a thing of the times we’re living in.
-etc.
-who knows maybe they want you to think their busy so they don’t seem desperate. Those in high demand are usually the ones wanted for a job.

But I’m with you in this unless there’s a good reason, even if they are busy.

I’m pretty much OCD when it comes to getting back to people. So I expect replies from others much to my dismay oftentimes.

Maybe on the lines of when someone asks for advice or have a question say on 411 or a thread on perb, and people respond with good advice, and there is no acknowledgment or thank you, I don’t really understand that mentality. Or you go out of your way to let someone in while driving, and there’s no wave.

I'd suggest the number 1 reason is a lack of staff. I've run across this in every industry. It may not be a good enough excuse, but it is the reality.

I think this is the #1 reason (lack of personnel) and the #2 reason is that the business is swamped already/can't deal with you in the immediate future.

When I go through a Tim's drive thru. the complaints I have
1. English not so good, or volume too low to hear
2. When I get change from a twenty; I get handed bills and change together and they don't repeat how much my change is. Its pretty hard reach out the window and get change and bills in one hand without dropping it. They should be saying "your bill is 14.30 and your change is 5 dollars and 70 cents".

Last month I was at a bakery, the young girl, gave me back $5 bill. I made her recount it and gave her the 5 dollars back. You got to have some idea about the amount being right.

I sometime wonder what the fuck they are teaching young kids in school these days when they can't do basic change on a cash transaction.

This exact thing has happened to me on a few occasions with providers.
Just another simp as far as they feel but it was supposed to be an event for the out of luck client.
No wonder we often stick with our proven favourites.

This happened to me last week with a certain well known agency here. It's even worse when they do respond at first, than not at all.

They responded to my message, confirmed the lady in question was able to see me at a certain time, so I confirmed it. But they went totally silent. All of this was in span of maybe 15 minutes. I politely followed up twice in the next hour since the appointment time was approaching. Nothing since, not even to say 'sorry her plans changed', or 'oops we forgot to get back to you' or 'we changed our mind about you', and it's been a week.

Thank god they're an agency and have a dedicated phone / booking person 🙄

Business must be amazing.

I think it's like many things, because we are no longer truly part of a community, where everyone knows everyone else, we have lost the societal imperatives that encouraged, or required, us to be honest, respectful, thoughtful and to act with integrity, because there were consequences if we did not, so for many people, none of that matters any more. The people that choose to act without integrity can, for the most part, get away without consequences, hence we have scammers, thieves, hackers ... and people who don't think it's important to be civil, or to reply to voice messages, emails or enquiries. The people with integrity will act based on that integrity whether anyone knows or not.
