Your commentary reminds me of the logic my Father used on me. Descending from a small E. European country, lets say Hungary, for purposes of example. He would say, "one thing about us Hungarians is we never won any wars---but we never started any either."
As a result I headed off a lot of fights in my time, that weren't my own,and broke up a good many as well. Good on ya.

Do Your Best

Hey, the thing about doing your best is being honest about it. If you are honestly doing your own best, then you will BE the best in that field. Am I going to take my car to the best mechanic in town? Yup. I could not care less if he was a great basketball player or not.

I totally believe in doing your own best. I am pretty good at what I do for my living. Can I do it better? With the training I have now, No I could not, but I am always learning that I can improve, and that if I don't take those oppurtunities then I am NOT doing my best.

No one has yet told me a good reason to bully someone or have a physical fight with someone. Yup, if someone comes up and hits me, he had better realise that I will one way or another shit kick him. Am I going to start that fight to begin with? NO.

Think about picking fights. Did you ever start one with someone you knew you could NOT beat? So that means you started them with people you knew you could beat. Wow that is too cool, you can beat up on someone who is weak.

Interestingly, my son came up to me today (after my original post) that he had gotten hit at school today. Some kid came up to him and told him that he was going to make him cry, then belted him in the stomach. Did he cry? No he didnt. He stood there and walked away. I however informed the school. And I can tell you that if I don't get the answers I want from the school, then I will find some other way to get them.

Don't think I am preaching do not protect yourself or other people, as I am not. I am preaching DONT START A FIGHT.

...So somebody please explain to me what all this bullying crap is all about, and why no one in authority has stood up and become the voice of reason. Why is there an agenda to make children weak willed little pussies?
Blame the lawyers.

We seem to be mixing a couple of issues on this board:

1. The race to mediocrity is an issue by itself and only related to bullying in a minor way.

2. Bullying: Take it from a guy who's been there, most of you asshats don't have a clue. The few little fights and scuffles to establish position are one thing, while painfull at the time, are pretty minor stuff. When a child spends his entire 12 years of schooling in defensive mode because he is the school whipping boy, that is the kind of bullying that is the problem. Even when he stands up for himself against one, another steps up to put him down again. He has no friends because anyone who may sympathize with him are afraid to be tarred with the same brush. Anytime any adult steps in to try and help, it only makes things worse as the bullies step it up becasue he "squealed". It is not only physical abuse, there is harrasment in the form of name calling, having books stolen and destroyed therby losing marks on homework assignments. If he trys to explain about the homework, see previous statement about adult interference. He can't even go the to washroom in peace, because some asshat will throw water on his crotch.

I can't think of how many times I wanted to cause a Columbine type event. And since then, it is even worse for the persecuted becasue if anyone appears the least bit dangerous, the police are called in to add to the persecution and bullying.

I am only a little sory about this rant, but the display of ignorance and lack of compassion displayed in the thread really makes want to go out and shoot something, starting with a few of you pricks!

That was insightful and very well said. It is a good thing this bullying isn't allowed on PERB--no gangs here--ha.

Interesting rant but you fail to state what you think is the answer? A Zero tolerence on bullies so they get expelled immediately from school? Incarceration? Do you accept any responsibility for what happen to you or is it everyone else's fault? I don't advocate bullying but as many have said, life is full of them so you better learn how to deal with it.

Thankyou for your words, rest assured that episode of my life was over 30 years ago. It is pretty sad when the first time in my life I remember being happy was in Military boot camp. I am now in a position to do something about bullies, in my workplace at least. You can be assured they get the short shrift from me.

Gee, take responsibility for my own abuse, that solves it! It's true that a persons initial demeanor can instigate the harassment, but eventually he becomes like a beaten dog. Even he does something right, someone steps on you anyway, because he can.

As for solutions, I think some of the programs now starting in elementary schools to build self-esteem and strategies for stopping the bullying when it s begins is a good start. I think leaving it the hands of teachers is wrong, as anyone who becomes a teacher probably did not detest school enough to avoid it, therefore may not recognize harrassment when they see. Anothe solution would be to get both parents involved early. Most of the time, they either don't know, or don't care. Some parents even encourage their children to be bulies so they won't get bullied themselves. They have the same mentality as demonstrated in some of the posts earlier in ths thread.

I don't think there is a simple solution. This is a problem that has gone on since the beginning of school. Basically people do not aquire respect for others early enough in life.

Opinion!!

OK!!Bullying is learned behaviour.Sad but True.It is so easy to be "MR BIG" behind a computer or msn:rolleyes: .I feel if they taught more of life skills in school ,all children would be groovin..:) We all come from our parents which where not bought with a manual to raise us as perfect human beings. We are a reflection of them if not a rebellion.Live and learn!Today is a gift, tommorrow is a mystery! We all breath the same air!Stop judging !"Point a finger there is 3 pointing back".As far as the dog scratching the child "a closed minded overprotective" mama" that has nothing to do,but to stir a stir.(( 10 mile umbilical cord in the end) feel sorry for that boy(boys).Everyone needs to learn the tools to deal with crisis.Have a Great Day!! A Humble Opinion Chantal xo

I don't know the ideal solution for dealing with bullies, but reading the thread on My Name is Earl got me thinking about Karma which in turn reminded me of an incident of bullying from my own childhood. Karma can be a bitch with a wicked sense of humour and it sure is enjoyable when a bully gets whats coming to them.

A bully and a group of his friends thought it would be an amusing activity to throw firecrackers at me and a friend. These weren't the puny fireworks that are still legal in parts of the US, these were powerful ones from Mexico (the ones with over 50mg of powder). Needless to say we weren't to eager to have these explosives hit us so we started to run and dodge their first volley. On their second attempt the tables were turned and we were the ones who got the pleasure and a good laugh at seeing the ring leader in balling his eyes out and his buddies in full panic mode as the dumb SOB stood there holding the mangled remains of his right hand missing several digits. :D Nothing humbles a bully quite like a good dose of karma and balling his eyes out in front of his would be victims. The dumb shit never bothered us again.

The sad thing about this story, as i see it, is, the kid was probably just emulating his dad. Poor bugger, gets his dad's karma.
