Bullet Proof Vests in BC?

Just a quick question, after Jamie Bacon was shot in Abbotsford a private members bill was proposed (and passed I believe) to make it more difficult to purchase a vest in BC. Does anyone know if it is actually illegal to possess one (not in a crime obviously  ) in BC? Before you post "why would you need one, are you some sort of gangster or something?" just don't. I have my reasons...:) Blondes can be dangerous! :p

Does anyone know? AFAIK you can buy them online or in Alberta, as well as in the States.

Mm...this doesn't really answer your question but I DO know that if you legitimately require on there is access, and if I'm not mistaken the law enforcement supplies in these cases.

Go to a payphone (annonymous) and call the non-emergency number of the police department and ask. Make sure you get the name of the officer you speak with and write it down with the date/time that you called incase he tells you it is okay and then you get ticketed later or something.

vests

I bought one for my son-inlaw who is a cop in the philipines. I bought it at a police supply place in Tacoma. There are police supply stores all over. A lot of the shops down here in the states will not sell to you unless you are a cop but you can buy all the vests you want on the internent. My son-in-law had to borrow a vest from the mayor over there. The police in the philipines are not very well equipped. Call a police supply shop and ask.

Just what we need when guns flow over the border like retired tourists...

Luckily we don't have the NDP in power so I doubt there's a ban on bulletproof vests.

I can just see them arguing now how bulletproof vests are unfair to all those crack addicts who worked so hard to get their illegal gun so that they could make a fair living by robbing people.

The "Spy Store" was carrying a vest about 3-4 years ago. Not sure if
they were bulletproof, but they at least provided some protection,
maybe from swords and knives.

When I went to this store I was informed that they are not selling them anymore due to possible legal reasons. The one in N. Van said the same thing too...

I have neighbors (husband and wife) that are both cops. From what they tell me, it is illegal to wear a bullet-proof vest and to put armour not only in your car, but also to fortify your house.

I know a few security guards who wear kevlar vests every day for work.

No, they aren't armoured car guards (who wear bullet-proof vests and carry guns)

They are mistaken (or lying). In fact, the Solicitor general of BC went to Ottawa a couple of weeks ago and tried to talk the government into passing laws to make those very same things illegal because they currently ARE NOT ILLEGAL IN CANADA.

So, while the cops in BC want it to be illegal, and so does the solicitor general, and they will probably give people a hard time about it, it is NOT illegal.

In fact, it is against WorkSafe BC rules to NOT wear one in certain jobs.

I was curious so I looked and found the replies that he got in Ottawa. The federal NDP want to ban all body armour and bullet proof vests (big surprise).

But the reply by the government was basically that such a ban would be against section 7 of the charter of rights. No such law would stand up to a charter challenge.

I found a bunch of other stuff, basically if you get caught committing a crime and wearing body armour, you are in much deeper trouble than you would have been if you weren't wearing the body armour at the time, and they are considering changing a few laws to stiffen it up even more than it currently is in that situation.

I would like to ask everyone to Write to their Federal MP and Provincial MLA to STOP THIS NONSENSE!

I see where the NDP is coming from, they don't want criminals wearing body Armour thus it should be Regulated, only Security, police etc.

But you're also taking away the right of law abiding citizens to protect themselves from the Criminals with the Illegal gun in his pocket.

It's a double edged sword, by letting one have it you allow the other to as well.

However look at the bright side, whenever we hear about "The person was shot but was wearing body Armour, however is not cooperating with police" We can be glad that medical money is not being spent patching up Mr. Scum bag in the ER. Those doctors will be able to spend their time with real patients.
