I have decided to retire my old computer and build a new one.

I have a new case, a sexy red one! Have a 200GB hard drive and a 500GB external drive. Also have two DVD burners.

What I need is a motherboard, a chip and ram. Also a heat sink and a new keyboard.

I do use it for everything from videos and graphics, to downloading torrent files and fooling around on the net. I want to play games as well. Mainly shooter type stuff like Farcry and Splinter Cell.
Basically it has to be very flexable.

So, give me advice on what to get. I do like to go to Anitec and NCIX to get stuff.

Thanks

An intel chip and a P35 based motherboard are probably the best bang for the buck. I'm not up on the latest video cards but a radeon 4850 would probably do you fine. If you are going to get 4 or more gigs of ram, you might as well go for Vista 64bit to be able to actually use it.

A starting point

http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer/guide-200809.ars

Hot Rod
"This is a system built for power, but with limited (read: realistic) funds; we're looking for the best "bang for the buck" on this one. The Hot Rod is also a system that almost anyone can build. Rather than cook up some mineral oil-soaked, refrigerator-powered machine, this box will fulfill your power-user requirements without requiring anything "Xtreme!" We aim to keep the Hot Rod beneath $1,600, but performance is sometimes worth a few bucks extra."

The information is two months old and prices are US so the exchange may hurt a little.

Negative...you want the Radeon ATI 4870. Best performance per dollar for video cards. Basically, it is currently the 3rd most powerful card in the world, but at 50% the price of the #1 and 2 cards, while coming up short only 15% in terms of power...which, you won't even notice...

Just an FYI. Windows 7 Operating system replacing Vista is coming out in 2010. That's not that far off, so you may want to reconsider if you plan to buy the most current hardware. BTW, Exchange rate is well over 31% right now. I dont recommend buying anything from the US. If it were me, I would wait until Xmas or Boxing Day for some deals.

B4 I google....

anyone know right off the bat a site that gives step by step to build your own computer?

or even

to completely upgrade an old computer?

think it might be fun to build your own.

thanks everyone.

If you havent done it before, spend the $50 for the store to build it for you. I find installing the motherboard to be the hardest part and troubleshooting afterwards ca be a nightmare.

You need an intel motherboard to give you efficiency, performance, and stability. Go to intel.com to search for performance chipset. The most recent one for desktop i think is x45. I forgot. Then go to asus.com to find a motherboard use this chipset. as to cpu, if you really want gaming, then use core 2 extreme (the one with quad core). Happy buying!!
