Did anyone happen to tape this episode of Off The Record that aired yesterday?!? One on one 30 minute interview with Brian Burke. I remembered all week and then forgot about it yesterday. If anyone taped it, please PM me.

for the record

I didn't see the interview, but I do want to go on record saying that next year the Canucks won't even make the playoffs. I don't know all of the polotics involved, but I do know getting rid of Burke was a wrong move. I also know if they start "dismantling" the core as they have spoke of, it will be quite awhile before we get a good team again.

Stupid, stupid move by management.

THT,

If you don't have an aversion to signing up and being a member, you can view it online on tsn.ca. You would have to search for it as it is there in its entirety (without commercials).

or if you do have an aversion to signing up..... here is a shortcut to the video....

OTR 1-1 with Brian Burke

Enjoy, its a great interview:D :D

IMHO....Orca Bay :D made a huge mistake.

they made a business decision. Hockey is a business. Tampa Bay coach said it the best. Its what the players do on the ice that makes hockey, not the coach, gm, owner, or the fans. Its all about the players.

no. they did NOT make a business decision. that is HORSESHIT. go into ANY organization where the guy in charge has taken it from losing money to making money in 6 years with a marked improvement every single year and you will walk into an organization whose top dog is secure in their job.

Six years ago the vancouver Canucks' season ticket base was less tha 10,000. I think at its lowest it was 6,000. Season ticket sales have now been capped.

Six years ago, .500 hockey was a good thing, now we've had 2 100-point seasons in a row.

Six years ago the canucks were losing money like it was going out of style. Now, they're profitable.

On top of that, the Canucks have gone from the bottom of the league to tops in their division. with a middle of the road payroll.

What happened is that pussy Stan McCammon didn't like being upstaged by Burkie. He doesn't like Burke and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that all this is, is a personality conflict. I find it pathetic and shamefull that Stan McCammon's ego is the cause of this.

THAT is why Burke lost his job.

"Business decision" my ass.

If it was a busuness decision, then they would have been straight-up with Burke, with the media and with the fans. Neither McCaw nor McCammon have given ANY explanation.

If THAT it how John McCaw runs his businesses, it's no wonder that "his" fortune was actually ammassed by his father and brother and NOT him.

Can anyone get the video at TSN to work???
I've registered and tried everything I can think of, but the only thing that loads up is the preceding ad, then it sits there.

Works for me..... you might want to check your transfer speed. I have high speed internet so I chose high speed. If you are running a dialup modem or something other than high speed try the 56k setting....it may work then.

TSN site works. I watched it last night and boy what a show. McCaw made a mistake. He should rectify this by firing McCammon and re-hire Burke for that position.

I was able to watch the clip, and I appreciate the heads up on it.

As for McCaw making a mistake.... hmmmm.

Burke says in the interview that there are two fundamental reasons he was fired and they have been acurately identified in the press.

One of the reasons speculated about in the press is the contract signing of Bertuzzi, to wit, that Burke went ahead and signed Bertuzzi to a specific contract when he knew McCaw would have had significant objections to the details contained within that contract.

IF this is true and it is indeed an accurate portrayal of events then I wouldn't have renewed Burke's contract either.

Operational independance is one thing... insubordination another. And that move, if it is true, falls too close to the latter.

I can guarentee you this... if any of Burke's employees ever did that to Brian... that guy's ass would have been booted out the door so fast he wouldn't have known what hit him. Burke would never have waited for no contract to run out before getting rid of such an employee, I can tell you that.

To me... that would explain why McCaw would allow Burke's contract to lapse. Yes, Burke may have turned the franchise around, built a winning team while keeping payroll down, filled the seats night after night, etc.

But that would be crossing a line which simply cannot be crossed and not dealt with.

I'm not sure where your angle on the take has been reported in the media, but last i heard, consensus among the media was that events re: Bertuzzi'scontract occurred as follows:

McCaw/McCammon wanted to wait until after the season to sign Bertuzzi.

Burke convinced them that the prudent move would be to sign Bertuzzi sooner rather than later because of the uncertainty surrounding CBA as well as the high probablility (at the time) that Bertuzzi's stock would increase over the course of the season resulting in a more expensive deal at the end of the season.

McCaw/McCammon gave Burke parameters within which the deal needed to be struck.

Burke went to Bertuzzi with the terms and Bertuzzi agreed.

Burke goes to report back to ownership and McCammon tells Burke that the deal is off AFTER Bertuzzi had agreed to the terms.

Burke goes back to Bertuzzi with this news...Bertuzzi "loses it".

Burke goes to NYC to talk to McCaw directly rather than reporting to McCammon.

Burke convinces McCaw that the deal needs to be made and that it is a good deal.

Bertuzzi is signed.

I agree that Burke's style is not for everyone, but by the same token, you cannot argue with his results.

If McCaw felt that Burke was being insubordinate, he could very easily have told Burke to take a hike with Bertuzzi's contract in NYC. To this point (according to the media, at least) all communication had been through McCammon. Given the manner in which ownership has handled Burke's dismissal...sorry...the nonrenewal of Burke's contract  I'd say that it paints a pretty good picture of the type of people John McCaw and Stan McCammon are. And that picture does not lend itself to supporting the notion that Stan McCammon was fair in his dealings with Brian Burke.

I will certainly give McCammon credit as one does not arbitrarily attain a position such as his for being a COMPLETE imbecile, however, regardless of what industry you are in, their actions from a business/PR position, is questionable at the very best and closer to absolutely deplorable.

I submit that they are explaining it as "not renewing Burke's contract" because that was the only way they could have gotten rid of Burke, given his level of success with the organization, without having to admit that it came down to a personality conflict.

Furthermore, hiring Dave Nonis as the new GM (as well as keeping the entire coaching staff intact) does nothing if not validates Brian Burke's philosophy regarding how the Vancouver Canucks should be set up and run.

Still can't get the video to work! Went to their troubleshooting page, updated everything they asked, turn on the options they suggested, and still get nothing. I sent TSN an email on what to do. Any techie's out there know how to capture streaming video?

It works for me HT.

What about your own firewall and antivirus settings, if its applicable to you? If you disable those you may get it to work.

Also there could be something in your cashe that is screwing things up. Try dumping that.

I could download it and send it to you by email. If i'm able to download to my harddrive. That might allow you to at least view it. Just an idea. --- Kev

BIG, HUGE thanks goes out to Kev who hooked me up with a copy of this interview. It worked!

Michael Landsberg is still as big a dork as I remember him and after seeing this quite candid interview with Burke, I stand by my post-Burke firing decision about the Canucks even moreso than I did before; this organization definitely will never get another red penny out of me. Not for a ticket to a game, not for a pay-per-view game, not even for one of their stupid lottery tickets.

Brian Burke is even more of a genius than before I saw the OTR interview and is still, far and away, the best GM Vancouver has ever seen or ever will see.

revved up

I see my earlier comments started some good debate. Smile. I stand behind my thoughts, that firing burke was a huge mistake. It is true that one man doesn't make a team, however, losing a man of his calibre will definately be missed. Burke was not and is not perfect, but in the small talent pool of good gm's, he ranks near the top.

I do wish the nucks the best, and if they keep the same group of players, with a few minor changes, they should continue to succeed. But if they go and start making a bunch of moves etc... I don't think they will fair as well.

My best to burke,
