Don't think this is limited to Lenovo. software is all around us and all have potential for security holes.
Keep in mind than Lenovo is a Chinese-owned company, so if you wanted to set up a system for widespread espionage, this could be one way to do it.
So, I read that the NSA has been hiding spying software in hard drives manufactured by Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and others.
And that there is iOS malware out there too that collects text messages, contact lists, pictures, geo-location data and will start voice recordings.
Big Brother is watching... or at least collecting large sums of data on us.

Chinese computer maker Lenovo has become the victim of a cyber-attack following a warning by the US government about software called Superfish. The Superfish adware program - which offered shopping tips - was shipped on some of the company's notebook devices.
A hacking group called Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the Wednesday attack via Twitter. The group has taken credit for several other attacks, including one on Sony.
